Deepak Kushawaha

Hi, I'm Deepak Kushawaha, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), Bengaluru. My research focuses on energy transition finance, climate finance, sustainable development, and environmental economics, with a particular interest in how developing economies can finance a just and resilient transition to low-carbon development.

I completed my PhD in Economics at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai, in July 2026. My doctoral research, Financing Dynamics of the Renewable Energy Transition in Developing Economies, examined how countries in the Global South can mobilize finance to support a large-scale shift to clean energy. My work lies at the intersection of energy economics, climate policy, environmental economics, and development finance, with a strong emphasis on empirical and econometric analysis.

At IIHS, my research has expanded to include subnational climate finance and disaster risk financing in India, alongside broader questions of sustainable development and energy transitions.

My research has been published in journals such as Energy Economics, Energy Policy, Finance Research Letters, Journal of Quantitative Economics, Economic & Political Weekly, and the Journal of Cleaner Production.

Outside academia, I write poetry. It offers another way of engaging with the natural world and with questions that do not always fit neatly into models or datasets. In many ways, it complements my research by reminding me that sustainability transitions are not only economic and technological but also deeply human.
