Student voice consists of opportunities for young people to share in decision making that influences their lives and the lives of their peers. The session will examine how student voice processes can open opportunities for more equitable outcomes at the classroom, school, and policy levels.

Educators often face competing commitments that challenge their ability to do the very work that is essential to personal and professional growth. Whether you call it mirror work, inside work, or self work, taking the time to reflect on your identity and how it impacts your ability to equitably and responsibly serve students is worth the investment. During this workshop, you will have an opportunity to complete a Life Map, engage with colleagues, and surface meaningful applications for your practice.
Creating the conditions where teachers and students can do their best work is THE job of school and district leaders. At the heart of this work are four key processes:
Providing a high-quality curriculum that is afforded to every student
Assuring instructional quality and coherence in learning
Knowing how well the standards are being learned by students
Making decisions to adopt effective practice and adapt or abandon efforts that are not advancing learning
The IFL Learning Walk Routine is a collaborative, robust process for engaging in cycles of inquiry around these core issues. The Learning Walk Routine is centered on how teachers teach, how students learn, and what gets taught to whom. It is a way to understand practice on an ongoing basis for providing feedback and support.
Join district, school, and classroom leaders from two districts as they discuss their experiences using the Learning Walk Routine to advance coherence in teaching and learning and to address shared problems of practice. During this session, you’ll discuss how the Learning Walk Routine might be used in your district and schools to illuminate successes and challenges, reveal high-impact opportunities to improve instruction across classrooms and help educators make informed choices.

This presentation will focus on the process of language curricularzation (the direct teaching of the language system) on the production of a category of students referred to as Long Term English Language Learners. As current discussions about equity are engaged in further and as indicators of equity are considered, I focus on Mexican-origin students whose varying racial and linguistic characteristics and their educational needs are frequently misunderstood by the broader educational community. Their experiences raise questions about the consequences of various mechanisms (ideologies of language, theories of bilingualism, and zombie conceptualizations of language) that operate at the level of both the larger policy system as well as the classroom itself.
