The aim of this actitivy is to discover the Art as a primary source of information an also to know the process of the Norman conquest of England, a period in history related to the settlement of the Feudal system and the construction of one type of castles, the Norman castles with a big keep or donjon.
We analysed the Bayeux Tapestry, a highly valuable work of art and historical document about the Norman conquest of England in the second half of the 11th century. This was a task in three parts:
Identifying the work of art
Discovering the purpose
Analysing the type of narrative
The webpage http://www.bayeuxtapestry.org.uk/BayeuxContents.htm was the main resource.
Questions:
Browse the web page, which contains scenes from the tapestry, find out, copy the picture imitating the style and label:
Four defensive weapons
Four offensive weapons
Two tools
Three types of soldiers
Four types of buildings or facilities.
The boats in the tapestry are similar to the Viking ships. Describe their shape, propulsion systems and basic characteristics
Describe the image of the banquet (feast). What tasks are people carrying out?
What type of castle did they build for defense?
What is the result of the battle?
This activity was inspired in the lesson about the Tapestry from the textbook History 2ºESO, Ed. SM and the textbook History 2ºESO Ed. Santillana.
