Exercise 6 in your PAU exam is a writing (120-160 words) related to one of the topics in the vocabulary section. You will be given two options to choose from. The text type might be an email (formal and informal), an essay or a review.
How is your composition going to be marked?
The highest mark you can get in your writing is 4 points.
Up to 1 point will be awarded to answers that comply with the genre, topic, and communicative goal requested.
Although the structure of the requested genre may typically include a name or signature, you must not sign your answer or include any real or fictional name, as current PAU regulations prohibit the use of personal identifiers. The omission of such structural elements will not be considered a mistake by examiners.
Up to 1.5 points will be awarded to aspects of cohesion, coherence, and quality of presentation.
The remainder 1.5 points will cover aspects of lexis (form, including orthography, and variety), grammar, syntax included, and, where appropriate, variety in the linguistic repertoire.
If the answer does not comply with the genre requested (email, essay, review), the answer will score 0 points.
How can I succeed?
These are some useful tips to follow when it comes to writing a text:
Organisation and layout of ideas, cohesion and coherence:
Compose the correct type of text. For example, don't write an email if you are requested to write an essay.
Both, the general idea and the different sentences in the text must be understandable.
The ideas must be clear and well developed.
Content must be organised in paragraphs.
Correct use of connectors (avoid using too many).
Correct punctuation.
Grammar correction and richness:
Extensive use of grammar structures and sentences.
Complex sentences.
Correct spelling.
Correct use of vocabulary and informative wealth.
Correct use of vocabulary and expressions depending on the topic and the reader.
Variety of vocabulary and expressions, avoiding repetitions.
Enough relevant content.
