In 1992 the Experimental Institute of Baccalaureate of Bilbao became the Ordinary Baccalaureate Center under the name of The Institute of Old Baccalaureate ICE.
In 1994 this name was changed to Instituto Botica Vieja and on 25 March 2003 the name change was approved for Botikazar, its current name.
Apart from Upper Secondary Education or Baccalaureate, Botikazar has also been offering Vocational Training studies, such as Social Integration and Sign Language. But it's three years that its educational offer only includes the Baccalaureate.
The premises are built on a plot previously occupied by the Nautical School, which moved to Portugalete in 1968. After this transfer, this building housed the ICE Institute of Education Sciences.
The building was expanded between 1982 and 1984, with a project of architects Ernesto Fernández Casas, Javier Bengoa Mardaras and Elías Mas Serra. The design of the building was raised in a rationalist way, recalling its silhouette to a boat in memory of its former status as a nautical school.
