Thanksgiving Day

What is Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is an American and Canadian holiday that celebrates the harvest and is a time for giving thanks. Most Americans and Canadians celebrate with a big family feast.

In the United States, Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November .

Pilgrims from England, who were not allowed to freely practice their religion came to the United States in search of religious freedom.

They arrived on a ship called the Mayflower in 1621.

Their first winter in the United States was difficult and many of them died. The Native Americans helped them and taught them how to plant corn and hunt.

The next year, they had a lot of food and made a feast to say thank you to the Native Americans who helped them.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

One of the world’s largest parades presented by the American department store Macy’s.

The parade started in 1924 and is held every year in Manhattan, New York.

Many celebrities participate in the televised parade and it is most famous for its balloons.

Some students in 2nd Year ESO BRIT have drawn and coloured a turkey and have included some sentences explaining the reasons why they are thankful for this year. You can see some pictures here.
