It can be found from southern Pará to northern Argentina, including Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay and in Rio Grande do Sul. It lives in all types of savannah and caatingas, where there are arboreal areas It is preferably daytime and can be found in bushes and on the ground. Despite moving slowly, it can become aggressive when a predator approaches, in addition to quickly changing its color, darkening it.

It usually uses its tail to support itself. It feeds on vegetables and arthropods (crickets and grasshoppers, mantis, insect larvae, beetles and wasps). It has oviparous reproduction, occurs in the rainy season, from September to March. Each female lays 7 to 31 eggs, the average being around 18. The incubation of the eggs lasts about four months.

The puppies are born approximately 40 mm long and reach sexual maturity in their first year of life. Species registered in the Várzeas with Herbaceous environment. Fires and deforestation have destroyed the place that serves as a home for this species, as well as for its food sources. Another factor is that people have inherited a wrong culture about it, many believe that if that animal bites you, and you don’t drink water faster, you will die dry! Environmental authorities urgently need to take action if they want to preserve it.
