Introduction:

The Gavião Real is an accipitriformes bird of the family Accipitridae its scientific name is Harpia harpyja . It is more common in Amazon Region and in stretches of Atlantic forest. It is endangered in South America more specifically in Brazil and it is considered extinct in Rio Grande do Sul, but the biologist Dante Meller saw one bird in 2015 in the Parque Estadual do Turvo in Derrubadas, RS.

You can read about it in this link g1.globo.com/rs/rio-grande-do-sul/noticia/2015/03/considerada-rara-maior-aguia-brasileira-e-avistada-em-parque-no-rs.html

Characteristics:

The Gavião Real measures about 90 to 105 centimeters, it is considered the biggest bird of America and one of the biggest of the world. It has wide and rounded wings that can reach up to 2 m in wingspan. The adult has a dark gray, almost black back, with a white chest and abdomen, a neck with a black collar, and a gray head with a split plume. The young man has light plumage, ranging from white to light gray. It takes 4 to 5 years to reach adult plumage.

Its feed is constituted mainly of tree mammals like sloths and primates. It also catches birds, like seriemas. Thanks to the well-developed tarsi and claws, with a halibut nail of up to 7 cm, it is able to capture prey over 6 kg.

Why is it endangered?

The Gavião Real is endangered here in Brazil because of the deforestation of forests and the extinction of individuals of nature, caused by hunting and killing.

We can help them by avoiding deforestation as these birds make their nests in emergent trees, very high and throw their tops above the average level of the rest of the vegetation.
