Playing music together creates new connections and brings excitement to our minds and bodies—it holds immense value for both individuals and society.
Recently, technological advancements have brought spotlight to "universal instruments" and "Accessible Digital Musical Instruments (ADMI)" that anyone can play intuitively. At the same time, there is a strong desire among former musicians—who had to give up traditional instruments due to physical disabilities—to once again pursue their own unique musical expression.
With a mission to solve social challenges through technology and unique ideas, IEEE Tokyo Section SIGHT has been exploring ways to create an environment where everyone can enjoy music together in their own style, while also paving the way for rehabilitation and exercise therapy.
In this workshop, embracing the ADMI spirit of "making instruments accessible to everyone regardless of physical conditions," we will challenge ourselves to create a unique instrument using everyday materials!
While anyone with disabilities can easily produce a sound with this instrument, the difficulty of playing it as intended and the infinite depth of personal expression are truly professional-grade. It is a real instrument with an incredibly wide range of expression that goes far beyond just making noise.
By crafting and experiencing an instrument where you can pursue your own unique expression, we aim to find inspiration and brainstorm directions for our future projects and initiatives!
Program
【Learn】Lecture on the Principles of Sound
Deepen your understanding of accessible instruments with a fun lecture on the principles of sound that form the basis of instrument making. (Lecturer: Mr. Kojiro Nishimiya, Past Chair of IEEE Tokyo Section SIGHT)
【Experience】Instrument Making & Practice
Craft your very own accessible instrument with your own hands and practice playing it.
【Create】Ideathon & Group Work
Combining the perspectives of researchers, engineers, and users, we will discuss and present ideas on what initiatives, improvements, and social outreach are needed to make accessible instruments more widespread in society.
