New Horizons is an interplanetary space probe that was launched as a part of NASA's New Frontiers program. New Horizons is currently in the Kuiper Belt, where it will continue to collect data on Kuiper Belt objects and faraway worlds like Neptune and Uranus for the foreseeable future. New Horizons is a NASA mission to study the dwarf planet Pluto, its moons, and other objects in the Kuiper Belt, a region of the solar system that extends from about 30 AU, near the orbit of Neptune, to about 50 AU from the Sun. NASA's New Horizons became the first spacecraft to visit dwarf planet Pluto in July 2015. The far-traveling spacecraft also visited a distant Kuiper Belt object Ultima Thule (2014 MU69) now called Arrokoth in January 2019.when New Horizons took Pluto's temperature, the dwarf planet was cold colder, even, than anyone had predicted. Researchers were puzzled. Earthbound instruments gauged Pluto to be minus-280 degrees Fahrenheit. New Horizons showed that Pluto's thermostat was dialed to 330 degrees below. Interestingly, although New Horizons was launched far faster than any outbound probe before it, it will never overtake either Voyager 1 or Voyager 2 as the most distant human-made object from Earth, thanks to gravity assists they received from Jupiter and Saturn. This summer, the mission team will transmit a software upgrade to boost New Horizons' scientific capabilities. For future exploration, the spacecraft's nuclear battery should provide enough power to keep New Horizons operating until the late 2030s.
