Reports To: Day Labor Program Manager and Mujeres en Accion Program Manager

Status: Full Time, Non Exempt

Contract Close Date: June 30, 2023 (may be extended)

Salary: 54,000



The Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA) is a nonprofit community based organization whose purpose is to promote self-determination in the low-wage working community in Southern California politically, culturally, and economically using popular education based organizing methods. We promote the development of collective solutions to community problems.


Position Summary: The Wage Claim Coordinator works with IDEPSCA’s base of day laborers and domestic workers informing them of their wage and hour rights and supporting workers when they have wages stolen. Support includes mediation with employers, filing claims through the city, country or state wage enforcement offices, and/or referrals to legal partners for mechanic’s liens or other remedies.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish);

  • Knowledge of workers’ rights including wage and hour law and wage claim procedures in Los Angeles.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to immigrant rights and social justice;

  • Ability to work flexible hours; and weekends when is necessary (work early, afternoon and/or evening)

  • Ability to work remotely/independent and keep track of activities online, on computer and on paper.

  • Strong communication skills: in person, via email and by phone

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Strong teamwork and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of computer operations (Windows, Word, Excel, Internet, Google Drive, data entry and equipment operation such as copiers, fax machines, and telephones required).

  • Comfortable working with diverse groups and populations including but not limited to houseless folks, people struggling with mental health issues and substance abuse issues.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and keep deadlines.

  • Willingness to work at a small storefront location and spend some time outdoors in heat, cold or rain.

  • Patience and courtesy.

  • Have established self care practices to support in dealing with secondary trauma.

  • Must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated (this includes booster)

  • Physical requirements: Ability to pull, push, carry, lift up to 10 pounds.


Job Responsibilities

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Create and help disseminate materials, including via social media channels, to provide education to day laborers and household workers regarding wage theft

  • Provide orientation and assistance to day laborers and household workers over the phone and/or in person.

  • Assist and support workers with wage claim mediations.

  • Assist and support workers in submitting claims with the City Office of Wage Standards or the Labor Commission, follow up on the claim and assist workers during the whole process.

  • Organize and document in a timely manner wage claim cases, update information when is necessary and have them accessible for managers to review.

  • Create and maintain database of wage claims

  • Maintain and create reports and statistics for campaigns, grants and contracts

  • Represent IDEPSCA in Coalitions and meetings regarding day labor and domestic worker wage theft.


Compensation and Benefits

Compensation & Benefits: $54,000/year. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance. Sick days, personal & vacation days and holidays.
