The Day Laborer Program is a program funded by the City of Los Angeles and run by IDEPSCA. Day Laborer hiring centers provide a community-supported alternative for day laborers who previously looked for work on street corners to find work in a more humane, safe and organized environment

Position Summary: The Day Labor Outreach Coordinator plans and carries out the outreach responsibilities at IDEPSCA’s Community Job Center to bring job opportunities and resources to day laborers and household workers. The Outreach Coordinator builds support for the Center by conducting outreach to day laborers, current and potential employers, local businesses, community groups, among others to bring new participants, job opportunities and/or resources for based members. The Outreach Coordinator works as a member of a team with the Site Coordinator, Program Manager and Administrative assistant. This is a 100% in person position.

Job Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish);

  • Knowledge of and commitment to immigrant rights and social justice;

  • Ability to work flexible hours; and weekends when is necessary (work early, afternoon and/or evening)

  • Ability to work remotely/independent and keep track of activities online, on computer and on paper.

  • Strong communication skills: in person, via email and by phone

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Strong teamwork and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of computer operations (Windows, Word, Excel, Internet, Google Drive, Social Media including Facebook, Instagram, Yelp,. data entry and equipment operation such as copiers, fax machines, and telephones required).

  • Comfortable working with diverse groups and populations including but not limited to houseless folks, people struggling with mental health issues and substance abuse issues.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and keep deadlines.

  • Willingness to work at a small storefront location or that has a portable restroom (not a regular bathroom) and spend some time outdoors in heat, cold or rain.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a 14 passengers’ van

  • Patience and courtesy

  • Have established self-care practices to support in dealing with secondary trauma.

  • Must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated (this includes booster)

  • Physical requirements: Ability to pull, push, carry, lift up to 10 pounds regularly

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform outreach activities to find potential employers and/or job openings and connect them to workers.

  • Assist in ensuring that requirements of contract with the City of Los Angeles are met, focusing on outreach efforts to increase the number of participants, jobs dispatched and references to resources.

  • Assist the site coordinator in Implementing the organization’s COVID Prevention Plan.

  • Identify outreach activities in collaboration with the site coordinator and workers’ feedback to obtain more jobs, employers, allies and new participants and implement them.

  • Reach out to day laborers gathered at unaffiliated corners and invite them to use the day labor centers by promoting centers’ services and build solidarity among and with them.

  • Increase the number of registered members by doing outreach in the community and with allies.

  • Maintain a database of employers, local businesses, and agencies for referral

  • Assist Site Coordinator in maintaining and nurturing positive community relations with stakeholders including community members, city council reps and other organizations.

  • Follow up with and implement agreements reached by the day laborers and staff in general assembly meetings that are usually hosted every month.

  • Conduct outreach activities such as flyer distribution, phone banking, business visits and others that are needed.

  • Document incidents, events, problems, and conflicts that occur at the site or with members during activities or workplace when the Site Coordinator is not present. Maintain communication with site coordinator and program manager about the incidents.

  • Submit weekly reports/narratives about events/outreach activities to Site Coordinator when is needed.

  • Support Site Coordinator in planning and coordinating various on-site activities including but not limited to food/supply distributions, ensuring that Covid Prevention Plan Standards are adhered to

  • Cover worker centers when site coordinators are on vacation or attending meetings/events and/or when is necessary. (This includes all centers)

  • Support Site Coordinator in assisting workers with wage claims, filling out wage claims and/or referring them to the proper place for support.

  • Promote the center doing networking and/or providing presentations to find potential resources, allies and new members in person, online (yelp, social media, etc.) and by phone.

  • Ensure that the center is posting updated information in person and online about resources/programs for workers and community members.

  • Data Entry and Documentation of all outreach activities in a timely manner, either on paper or on the computer and make sure the information is accessible for the site coordinator, program manager and administrative assistant.

  • Complete data entry of daily activities in a timely manner to ensure that requirements of contract with the City of Los Angeles are met.

  • Support site coordinator to ensure that the center has office and cleaning supplies, which include PPE for staff and members.

  • Assist workers with referrals (internal and external) about housing, workers’ rights, immigration, health access, etc. and work with other programs to make referrals in some cases.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation & Benefits: $4,391.25 p/month. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance. Sick days, personal & vacation days and holidays.
