ICTP-SAIFR is happy to host a special lecture, tailored towards the general public, by Prof. Subir Sachdev, from Harvard University.
Title: 100 years of many-particle quantum mechanics: from Bose and Fermi to quantum materials and black holes
Abstract: In quantum theory, all particles in the universe are either bosons (named for S.N. Bose, 1924) or fermions (named for E. Fermi, 1926). This fact is crucial to our understanding of the flow of electrons in all materials, including those found in smartphones. In recent decades, it has become clear that certain many-particle systems with complex quantum entanglement can exhibit emergent particles called `anyons’, which are neither bosons nor fermions. Even more intriguing are systems, such as the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, which don’t exhibit any particle-like excitations at all. I will describe how these remarkable many-particle systems are playing a role in our understanding of modern quantum materials (such as the high temperature superconductors), in the design of fault-tolerant quantum devices, and in the theory of black holes.
The event will be streamed on YouTube (the link will be provided soon). More details can be found at this link.

Date: October 31, 2025
Time: 19:00-20:00
Local: IFT-Unesp (Rua Jornalista Aloysio Biondi, 120 - Bloco II - Barra Funda - São Paulo/SP)
This symposium will bring together experts in Emergent quantum phenomena, Materials and structures for quantum technologies, quantum computation and simulation, quantum communication and cryptography, quantum optics and optoelectronics, nanodevices, and quantum education and didactics. The event will feature plenary lectures, technical sessions, and poster sessions, as valuable opportunities for young researchers and graduate students to present their work and engage with global leaders in the field.
The event will be held in the main campus of Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia (UPTC), which is among the largest and best ranked universities in the country. It is located in Tunja, the capital of Boyacá, one of the richest Colombian regions regarding history, geography and cultural heritage. Embedded in the heart of the Tropical Andes, a mountain ecosystem that offers a year-round cool spring weather and astonishing views.
The event is officially recognized as part of the UNESCO International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.

(September 13th 2025, ICTP-SAIFR - São Paulo, Brazil)
To celebrate the 100 years of quantum mechanics, ICTP-SAIFR is organizing an outreach activity, tailored towards the general public. During the event, there will be two lectures that will guide the public into the theory of quantum mechanics, its main achievements, as well as towards their potential towards technological applications. At the same time, it will be launched a multimedia reportage that ICTP-SAIFR has realized to celebrate the 100 years of quantum mechanics and to describe the main lines of investigations active in Brazil.
The lectures will be delivered by Marcelo de Oliveira Terra Cunha and Gustavo Silva Wiederhecker, who have also served as scientific referees for the reportage. Terra Cunha is full professor at IMECC-Unicamp, coordinator of QuInTec (Quantum Information Technologies) and he works on the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics. Wiederhecker is professor at IFGW-Unicamp and he performs research in the area of non-linear optics and optomechanics.
The event will be realized in Portuguese and streamed on YouTube at this link. More details can be found at this link.
