Our Cats

by The B Family

We have three cats, adopted from shelters at different points over their lives. We have included a little story about the adoption day for each cat, and have also made a list of CAT-agories and ranked the cats in order. 1 is the cat that is the best at that area, 2 is second best and 3 is third best.

Admiral Dewi

Adopted in New Hampshire 14.5 years ago, this 20.5-year-old cat is an old grumpy man with love for Jackie and a high tolerance for Matthieu. He oftens wonders how his days of living alone with Jackie and a pile of books turned into the chaos of a home with kids and other cats. Admiral often tells the other cats to get off his lawn when trying to eat in peace with a swift box across the cheek. His favorite part of the day is when Goodie gets shut in Théo's room and he can roam and cuddle in peace. Name at shelter: Bonsai II. Named after a song Jackie grew up singing at camp, Admiral's stripes line up across his legs and make him quite dignified. Dewi is the Welsh spelling for David and St. David's day is one of Jackie's favorite memories from studying in Wales. Admiral picked Jackie at the shelter, the staff had never seen him approach a person in the 6 months he had been there- and he made himself quite known to Jackie through meows and cuddles.

Pippi Goldbug

Adopted in Iowa City six years ago, Max selected Pippi from a litter of orange tabby kittens at the shelter. Max was just three and determined to have an orange kitten he could name after his favorite french word of the moment (pipi-pee) and his favorite character from Richard Scarry's book "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go". Pippi was a purring, cuddling member of the family from day one. He turned into a very large orange tabby that greets people at the door, follows repair people around the house, and has a motor purr. Name at shelter: Catalpa

Goodie Bo Peep

Adopted in Iowa City seven months ago, this petite calico with stripes was Théo's pick. He was drawn to her because she was a cutie and a good playmate and named her Goodie for this reason. "I had those shaky toys and I rolled one and she catched it! When we adopted her, we have lots of toys at home and she plays with them. We have a fishy thing and when I put it down, she catches it!" Her middle name is because of Théo's love of Toy Story and the strong heroine Bo-Peep. Other names include Goodie Gumdrops, Sweet heart Potato, Bo-Peep gummy gum. You might have met her on a leash by the Bigers, as she loves to linger in the shade of the trees, nibble on grass, and climb trees. Shelter name: Tiger Pearl
