On the night of the school budget vote, Ichabod Crane Primary School hosted two visiting authors for a special event celebrating our young writers in grades K–3. In preparation for the evening, students created thoughtful letters and colorful posters to welcome the authors.
We were honored to welcome Matthew McElligott, author of Even Aliens Need Snacks and Benjamin Franklinstein Lives!, and Carin Berger, author and illustrator of The Little Yellow Leaf and In the Night Garden. Families enjoyed exploring the student work displayed throughout the hallways, and the gymnasium was filled with excitement as books were purchased and signed.
Thank you to everyone who made this evening such a memorable celebration of reading, writing, and creativity!

On Tuesday May, 17th the Primary School hosted an Authors Fair. In addition to showcasing the Primary School students' incredible writing and illustrating, it is a tradition to invite two local authors to meet our community and sign books. This year the school welcomed Hudson Talbott and Monica Wellington.
Hudson Talbott is the award winning author of 27 books for children including A Walk in the Words, A River of Dreams, and From Wolf to Woof. He was also awarded a silver Caldecott Honor for his illustrations in Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson.
Monica Wellington is credited for illustrating over 40 books for young readers, and was the author for most of them. Her titles include Apple Farmer Annie, Mr. Cookie Baker, Dear Ballerina, and her most recent title Eggs from Red Hen Farm.
The authors were delighted by the warm welcome they received from the book loving students here at Ichabod Crane. "We had an incredible turn out. I am proud to be a part of this wonderful community of readers!" said Primary School Librarian Ms. Moss.

Thursday, April 29th was Poem in Your Pocket Day! Students and Teachers were encouraged to choose a poem to carry with them from some selected by Ms. Moss, but some students chose to write their own!
Sharing a poem was a great way to show our school unity AND to make each other smile.
December - 2021
Primary School Students participated in the Hour of Code during their library time. The Hour of Code is an annual initiative organized by Code.org to introduce children to the world of computer science. It is designed to demystify code, show that anyone can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. Librarian Ms. Moss reported that the students had fun working together (while socially distanced!) to solve problems while gaining new skills.
Second and Third graders visited the Code.org website and practiced writing block code, while first grades used color code to control mini robots called Ozobots. Kindergarteners did some offline activities to learn some basics of coding. Way to go, students!
The Primary School Library wrapped up a Race to Read Week during the first week in December. The week is a special book distribution program generously sponsored by the Ichabod Crane PTA.
During Race to Read week every student in the Primary School selects a free book to keep! Guests are invited throughout the week to read to the classes and show how you can have a life long love of reading . This year guests read virtually to students.
Special guest readers included Primary School Principal Williams, Deputy Sam Plass, the librarians from our fabulous local public libraries, as well as many district parents. Primary School Librarian, Mr. Moss, wishes to sincerely thank all the readers who volunteered their time!
