First Graders build off the the foundation we started in Kindergarten, and start to become more independent in their ability to find their favorite books on their own.
We dive deeper into how the library is organized by really taking a close look at the differences between fiction and nonfiction books. Moving on from there we build solid independent practice navigating the fiction shelves to "Find that author!" (The secret is ABC order!).
We also begin to dabble in understanding the good ol' Dewey Decimal System (Yes, we still use it here in the library world!).
With a better understanding of how to locate nonfiction books, we are ready to tackle some research! First graders practice using the SUPER 3 research strategy: Plan, Do, Review! Learning how to ask questions and where to look for answers is a big part of our first grade research process.
The 2024-25 school year is off to a great start!
First graders have reviewed the parts of a book and the difference between fiction and nonfiction. We even voted for the kind of book we think is best! In December we celebrate The Hour of Code and get to know about computer programing. January is Caldecott Season and we will "judge" this year's contenders for the best illustrated children's book!
Please note: this section is NOT an assignment! It is just for fun :)
