Library time is all about learning to love books and the stories and information inside!
We start the year by building a library community: learning what a library is and how we all are responsible for taking care of it. We learn how to use our shelf markers to keep our books in their “homes” and how to treat a book to keep it happy and safe. Borrowing a book is a BIG responsibility!
Next we learn about the difference between fiction and nonfiction books and how to find them in the Primary School Library.
Kindergartners also dive into learning about the “ingredients” of a story: Characters, Setting, Sequence, and Plot/problem.
We learn about the roll of the author and illustrator. Caldecott season is a favorite time of the year, as we try to figure out which books will win the prestigious award given by the American Library Association for the children's book with the best illustrations!
I look forward to encouraging budding love of books and reading with all of this year’s Kindergartners!
Kindergarten starts the year learning about library manners and expectations. We also focus on how to keep our books "happy", and what makes them "sad". After learning about how to take care of our books we begin to bring one home each week!
Students will also learn about the parts of a book and the difference between fiction and nonfiction.
