We all celebrate the new year, but there are a lot of types of celebrations.

Now, let’s talk about the Chinese New Year.

What are the differences between our New year and the Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year is called Lunar Year, too. It is a festival that celebrates the new year that is coming. It is celebrated in China, of course, and in parts of the Far East, in Corea, Japan, Singapore and Nepal.

The Chinese New Year follows the lunar calendar, and the date of the beginning of the New Year can change.

But which are the superstitions of the Lunar Year?

Chinese people are very superstitious and there are a lot of popular beliefs. For example: do not wash your hair during the beginning of the New Year. You must not cry, wash your clothes, use knives, and use words like “dead”.

Why is the tiger year and what does it mean?

2022 is the water tiger year which happens every 60 years. It symbolizes stroger, determination, action and instinct.

What are the legends about the Chinese New Year?

There are two legends that are very similar to each other. The first one said that the Emperor of Jade, the King of the Paradise, organized a competition where he understood what was the order of the zodiac signs. The tiger arrived third after the mouse and the ox. The second legend said that Buddha called all the animals on the Earth, but just 12 came to him. He rewarded these 12 animals (tiger included),giving their name to each lunar cycle.

How do the Chinese celebrate the New Year in Milan?

In Milan, Chinese people celebrate the New Year in ChinaTown, which is really close to our school. In Fact, in Paolo Sarpi, the ChinaTown street, there are a lot of red lanterns and typical dragons shows. Before the Covid emergency, we used to celebrate with the dragon every year in our school. There was a show with people that danced together with a dragon and lion costume.
