The Tiger Theatre program at Baldwin County HIgh School is an award winning program. We are thrilled that you are joining us! Please know that our space is a "safe space" for anyone and everyone who wants to take part. This is a creative space where students can explore their interests, talents, and be a part of something we take great pride in for our school.
Our program is not about creating stars. We are here to tell powerful stories as an ensemble of actors, designers, writers, directors, and technicians who respect one another on all levels.
Some students will take part in theatre for the fun of it, and I hope they will be a part of the arts for their entire lives. Other students will show an interest in pursuing the arts as a career. Once a student declares they want to start down that path, it becomes a conversation with the student, teacher, parents, and counselors. Our goal is to provide each and every student with college and career ready skills to be successful in the arts and all other career possibilities.
Here are some frequently asked questions:
Q: Does a student have to be in classes to participate in the productions?
A: The short answer is 'no.' However, rehearsals for shows are not class. In class, students learn acting techniques and skills that are not taught in rehearsals. Therefore, students who are not taking classes are at a disadvantage. Plus, they will only learn a sliver of performance and tech skills compared to what students who actively take classes will learn. Additionally, if a student is interested in going to college and pursuing a career in theatre, technical theatre, or other areas, classes are a must to be properly prepared. Bottom-line - rehearsal is not class. Rehearsal is an opportunity to apply what you've learned in class.
Q: I don't sing. I've never taken voice lessons. Can I audition for a musical?
A: Of course you can! BCHS has a great chorus taught by Mr. Howard. During theatre classes, Mr. Butler will teach vocal techniques and help students prepare vocal music for auditions. This is educational theatre - we are here to learn new skills!
Q: What is the time commitment after school?
A: During football season, the band practices on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Therefore, we will rehearse on Monday afternoons from 3:30 - 5:30 and Wednesdays from 3:30 - 5:00. We will add the occasional Saturday morning. I do my best to steer away from Wednesday nights and Sundays.
Q: Do you rehearse during school?
A: I do not rehearse during theatre classes. I preserve and protect that time for teaching. I do have rehearsals during AO/Lunch and Enrichment.
Q: What is the cost to be involved in the competition side of theatre?
A: It varies based on where we are traveling to. For example, District Trumbauer is in Gulf Shores, and we are not spending the night. That festival will cost each student around 35.00 - 40.00. When we travel to places like Birmingham and have to spend the night, the cost can vary from $60.00 - 120.00 depending on the bus fees, hotel accomodations, and festival fees.
Q: Do you do fundraising?
A: I apply for grants and ask for funding from various sources. These funding sources can help pay for parts of our traveling fees, but not all of them. I should have more accurate information on this as soon as they announce the location for State Trumbauer.
Q: How can parents help? Is there a booster club for theatre?
A: Parents are always welcome to volunteer and help. My approach to our theatre department is to treat it like a working business in the arts. I want to give our students the as many opportunities as possible to learn about the inner workings of how a theatre operates. Parents can help out by feeding the cast on long rehearsal days or two show days. Help us make connections to get local sponsors for our productions, program advertisements, and donations from the community.
