The National Aquarium came to HZ with a mission—to build a fully integrated brand campaign to create meaningful connections with local and visiting audiences, showcase the Aquarium’s mission, put the Aquarium top-of-mind for those planning visits to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, and, ultimately, increase ticket sales.

Simple, right?

After hours of talking to Aquarium employees, digging through previous brand efforts and materials, and researching competitors and consumer psychology, we found a common thread—that staff and visitors alike felt a profound connection to the ocean.

So instead of marketing the National Aquarium as an attraction, we built an omni-channel campaign from a simple idea—that the call of the water is already inside you. And at the National Aquarium, you can answer it.


Drawing on data from our various research efforts, we started by perfecting our message. From there, we went to work building the executions, which included TV, digital, out-of-home (billboards and bus wraps), paid social and print.

On launch in June 2018, we knew we’d spoken to something fundamental. Quarter over quarter, our efforts helped the Aquarium exceed attendance projections, and earned nods from the American Advertising Federation of Baltimore (Gold ADDY, Social Media), the 2018 Maryland Travel Tourism Summit (Best Media and Public Relations Campaign), and American Marketing Association Baltimore (Grand MX Campaign of the Year and Best Social Media Campaign of the Year).




The campaign was designed to both inspire wonder and to drive visitation by combining our hopeful brand voice with bright, optimistic visuals that celebrate the connection between humans and the ocean.
