TARGET AUDIENCE: Upper primary and all secondary school teachers from all subjects.
DESCRIPTION: Current research and data shows that there is a strong link between standards of reading and learners’ ability to gain knowledge and deeper understanding in all subjects across the curriculum. Therefore, it is imperative that reading is seen as an important pedagogical tool to strengthen and deepen learners’ knowledge, skills and understanding across any curriculum.
The ‘Teaching Advanced Reading’ programme has been designed in collaboration with schools in Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Swansea to ensure a fit-for-purpose professional learning opportunity in how to explicitly teach reading skills successfully for upper primary and secondary school pupils.
The whole-day training is suited to any teacher looking to develop their approaches to classroom teaching of reading and gain further insight and practical advice on how to:
Select challenging texts
Incorporate and use relevant reading strategies in their classroom
Introduce and teach a text effectively
How to question effectively when reading
These sessions will offer a clear balance of theory, practice and current examples from schools across the Partneriaeth region. This training will support schools in meeting the challenges of coordinating the progressive development of reading skills across different subjects and teachers.
