Literacy
This year Esmae has really enjoyed using literature as part of our language lessons this term. After reading the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Esmae created some wonderful character descriptions, writing from different perspectives, and really enjoyed the fictional creative writing where she developed her own sweet. More recently Esmae created a detailed recount on Queen Boudicca and a non fiction report on the Sea Empress disaster.
Esmae is developing her ability to organise her writing as the year has progressed, this was demonstrated with her Eisteddfod entry. Esmae has continued to develop her Oracy skills. Esmae has continued to make progress with her reading this academic year. Next year Esmae will benefit from following her planning more effectively.
Numeracy and Mathematics
Esmae has made real progress this year in maths, this is down to improving her listening skills in whole class introductions, Esmae has realised that she can complete some of the daily tasks in maths and has gained confidence from that, she has become more confident in her written methods and applying these independently in her maths work. Esmae has developed her place value in 4 and 5-digit numbers. Esmae has developed using column addition to add and subtract large whole numbers and decimals. Esmae has also worked on mental methods, to subtract by counting on, halving and doubling strategies and multiplication facts, using TT blast as part of her skill sessions.
Esmae has developed her cross curricular numeracy skills by using coordinate’s in Christmas activities and she really enjoyed the symmetrical work on Roman Mosaics where she then made her own Mosaic in expressive arts.
Science and Technology
Esmae has planned many scientific experiments this year, she has classified materials and really enjoyed the popping candy experiment. Without doubt though Esmae’s favourite activity this year has been designing, packaging and evaluating her own chocolate bar. Esmae enjoyed the process of explaining how why chocolate melts when heat is added and then the reversible process of changing back to a solid. Esmae enjoyed researching what chocolate fillings were the class’s favourite and then using adobe express to develop a professional packaging for her chocolate bar. Esmae has continued to develop her computational skills this year and enjoyed coding the drone outside in the playground and also enjoyed the Minecraft education activity where she had to design a boat to help with the ongoing problem of plastic in the ocean.
Expressive arts
Esmae has worked really hard this year on her artistic skills, Esmae has created some amazing art pieces this year including positive and chocolate bar logo design in the autumn term. Esmae experimented with textures and tools to create a truly amazing Roman shield as part of a group and she showed great artistic skills. Esmae has also really enjoyed the freedom to add her creativity skills to her ACCE challenges and other areas of the curriculum. Esmae loved our after school URDD club and produced a fantastic collage around the topic of roots.
Esmae has really enjoyed the new music scheme of work we have in school by composing and performing musical pieces as a group.
Humanities
Esmae has really enjoyed our topics this term, Esmae really enjoyed the topic The Wonderful World of Chocolate’, learning about the history if John Cadbury’s and enjoyed the experience to visit Cadbury’s. Esmae also enjoyed looking at the timeline of different chocolates and how they have changed over time. Esmae also completed a detailed PowerPoint presentation on the history of monks, which she found very interesting. Esmae has also made progress with her understanding of the Roman Empire, completing map work and work around their general at the time and completed a persuasive speech as if she was leading her army against the army of Germania.
In RVE Esmae enjoyed researching about the Christingle and friendships. She enjoyed bringing her acting to life with our class’s version of the Easter story.
Health and Well being
Esmae is always eager to take part in PE in our weekly lessons and has really enjoyed hockey, handball and netball this year. Esmae was also really enjoying her cricket sessions this year before her injury. Esmae has continued to work hard and can complete a range of activities for an extended period of time, and she has made real progress in her long distance running this year. Esmae has also benefited from the support from external agencies this year, she enjoyed the work we had with peaceful schools and more recently using ICT to create a well being action plan. Esmae is an active member of class discussion any worries in our weekly circle time sessions.
General comment
Esmae has made good progress this year. Esmae is an active part of discussion within the class and what’s been lovely to see this year is how she has become more confident in maths work and taking part more In discussion in maths lessons. I look forward to seeing Esmae’s learning journey next year in year 5.
