Year 2 - Esmae
Class 2 - Mrs Mumford
Class 2 - Mrs Mumford
This Spring Term the children used pupil voice to decide on our class topic - 'The Great Fire of London.'
We will also be taking part in our School's St David's Day Eisteddfod.
There will be opportunities to work with local organisations such as:
Local Fire Safety Officer
Dylan Downs - Newtown Football Club
PC Sweetman
Esmae is currently working in the Yellow group for phonics.
She has nearly learnt all her speed sounds with just 3 left to learn.
'ure' - sure it's pure
'are' - care and share
'tious' 'cious' - scrumptious delicious
She is recognising her phonics sounds and is using them to read independently and as a group. She takes turns well during partner practise and enjoys answering questions based on our weekly book. She is trying hard with her spelling of red tricky words.
Esmae identifies that her writing needs a capital letter and a full stop but sometimes has to be reminded to put them in.
Esmae is starting to join her handwriting however she can rush her work and this is something she will need to continue to work on. This isn't because she can't do it, this is because she always likes to be first to complete and finish. When working 1:1 with an adult Esmae can present her work well.
Target: To try and slow down her pace of work and take her time
This Spring Term Esmae has written a story called 'The Poor boy and the Magical Bird.'
She created a story map within a group to help start her story journey. Working with an adult she used her oracy skills to re-tell her story verbally and to begin to create her first draft.
When working together we discussed paragraphs and taking time with her presentation.
Esmae knows that she starts a sentence with a capital letter and that it ends with a full stop but she isn't always consistent in doing so. We worked together to bump her work up using purple polishing pens. Verbally when doing this Esmae had some lovely ideas and we worked together to get them into her writing.
Target: To consistently use capital letters and full stops.
Esmae followed her story map with support to create her story.
Using purple polishing pens and with an adult Esmae was able to add improvements to her work.
Esmae has been learning names of 3D shapes. We also worked together to sort them into a Venn diagram according to their properties. She used the different 3D shapes to find out about their properties. She started to identify which can roll and how many faces they have. She can recognise a pyramid and cube and is trying hard to recognise others.
She also has been learning to tell the time on the analogue clock. Esmae has worked hard at identifying o clock times and then drawing them herself. She is beginning to recognise half past on an analogue clock.
Esmae has been using her knowledge of place value to round numbers to the nearest 10. She has been practical in activities to help her. Mentally Esmae showed good knowledge of rounding but this didn't always reflect in her written work. She has been reminded to take her time and slow down.
Esmae enjoys using our self evaluation stickers to evaluate her work and to tell us how she is feeling about it.

Esmae has been recognising time on an analogue clock.
Esmae has been rounding to the nearest 10 in 2 digit numbers.

Da iawn Esmae!
Da iawn Esmae! 3rd place for your story!
Esmae was very proud of her work.
Esmae is always happy and keen to learn in class.
Within her Literacy work Esmae needs to ensure her written work includes punctuation. These include capital letters and full stops. We will then move on to adding exclamation marks and speech marks within her work.
She also needs to really take her time with regards to her handwriting and presentation.
In her Maths work Esmae's next step of learning will be to identify half past times on an analogue clock.
We will continue to work on role reversals of numbers and letters.
Pupil's comments: I need to put in capital letters and full stops, I just sometimes forget. I enjoy cooking and making Welsh Cakes. I find writing hard because some words can be quite tricky. I tried hard on stage but I was a bit shy infront of others. I like reading and going to the school library.
This Summer Term Esmae will be completing her work on 'The Great Fire of London'.
She will also have different learning opportunities such as:
Swimming lessons
Sports Day
Water Workshop
School Trip
Coronation work based on King Charles III
Esmae has worked hard on her targets.
She is showing knowledge of half past on an analogue clock. Good girl!
She also wrote her own diary entry and included capital letters and full stops correctly! Da iawn!
We are continuing to work on presentation.
Esmae is becoming confident with her speed sounds and is using them in her reading and spelling activities.
She is using her listening skills to hold a sentence. Here she re-writes the sentence she has heard and practices putting in capital letters and full stops. She enjoys marking her work together with the teacher.
She is beginning to use red rhythms to help spell any tricky words.
Esmae has been learning about Samuel Pepys and how he wrote diaries during the Great Fire of London. Esmae enjoyed making her own quill and using ink to write in the same style.
She has been learning about ways to stay safe in a fire. She created a poster to include information to help others if needed. She tried ever so hard with her presentation and was full of good subject knowledge about this topic.
Esmae takes part in our Welsh Phonics sessions 'Tric a Chlic'. She has just moved onto 'Llwyd'. She has been practising her knew phonics sounds. She enjoys reading simple Welsh stories and completing activities based on the book. She asks and answers questions confidently in Welsh.

Esmae has moved onto 'Llwyd' in Cam 1.
Esmae has been working on Money in Maths.
Esmae recognises the different coins.
With support she is beginning to add together different coins to find their totals. She is showing more confidence in using the correct notation and using £ and p.
She has enjoyed being practical and interactive.
She was set a challenge to find different ways of making a £1. She persevered throughout this activity.
Esmae was encouraged to start with the biggest coin when making and adding totals together.
She isn't afraid to ask for help and is always willing to learn.

Esmae has created her own King Charles III portrait which will be displayed in the village hall for the community celebrations.
Esmae enjoyed making biscuits to celebrate Eid.
Esmae has created a beautiful portrait.
Esmae had a great time at our trip to the local Fire Station. She listened well to the staff and learnt all about the safety equipment, procedures and what they do in an emergency. We listened to how things have changed over time. She thoroughly enjoyed using the hose pipe to squirt water.
Well done Esmae, you have tried ever so hard this year in all of your work.
Moving into Year 3 I would like you to work on slowing things down and taking your time. Remember you don't always have to be the first to complete your work.
A super effort, I look forward to teaching you again in Year 3.
Have a lovely Summer Holiday!
