What do I have to do for an ESSAY response?
You will be given a choice between two exam questions and YOU CHOOSE ONE!
This will usually be between a character and a theme question.
You should engage with the question in your response, ensuring you use the wording in the question.
Increasingly, the exam is providing statements and asking whether you agree or disagree. You should be answering whether you agree or disagree or partially in your answer.
20 marks = 40 minutes
5 minutes = planning (what are you going to talk about?)
35 minutes = writing (this is what matters!)
There should be a focus on CONTEXT (America 1930s) and why Steinbeck has created a character in a particular way etc.
You must support everything with quotes
You WILL NOT be allowed the book in the exam!
You must MEMORISE quotes!
Mark Scheme
You will be graded on the following:
A01 - Critical response to texts
A04 - Social, cultural and historical contexts
TOTAL MARKS AVAILABLE = 20 marks
