Siani Pob Man 1834 - 1917
Cymeriad diddorol iawn Cei Newydd / A very interesting character of New Quay
Siani Pob Man was born in 1834 and lived in an old dilapidated thatched cottage on the beach at Cei Bach, just above the high tide mark. Her real name was Jane Leonard.
She was instantly recognisable in the area, wearing an old trilby hat with a red and yellow handkerchief holding it in place.
She wore a black, red and white check shawl over a red and black dress and always wore wooden clogs.
She often smoked a clay pipe and would walk around the neighbourhood visiting houses and farms, hence her name.
Siani Bob Man beacame a tourist attraction, she was popular with visitors many of whom walked from New Quay along the beach to see her at Cei Bach.
She made her living selling eggs that her chickens laid in and around her cottage fortune telling for money.
A postcard by Desmond of New Quay, available after 1905, of Siani Pob Man feeding her chickens outside her dilapidated thatched cottage on the beach at Cei Bach.
She was popular with the visitors and became something of a tourist attraction in her own right.

The Harbour
New Quay harbour act was passed in 1834 and the stone pier was constructed at the cost of £4,700.
The big pier was built in 1835 It is a massive three level curving pier of squared rubble blocks, which featured a Pepperpot lighthouse built in 1859 to replace an earlier structure destroyed in the great storm of 1859.
In the 1800s there were 1300 people living in New Quay, but in 2024 there were only 1045 people living here.

Football - 1911-1912 and 2023-2024
In the 1911-1912 the football kit was black and white and they had long sleeves and the football boots were very heavy and were cumbersome and the captain even had a cigarette in his mouth.
The coaches are wearing suits with a shirt and tie as well.
In the 2023-2024 the football kit was green and black, they have plastic studs and have comfortable padded football boots.. The players have sponsorship advertised on their shirts.
Bowling - 1937 and 2020
A photo at New Quay Bowling Club May 1937, on the occasion of the reopening of the bowling green by Alastair Graham, Plas y Wern. There was a competition involving Aberaeron, Lampeter, Newcastle Emlyn, Aberystwyth and Cardigan, which explains the number of people on the green.
The bowlers in 1937 are all wearing suits, shirts, ties and hats.
The club had started on land behind Park Street, but moved to its present location on Francis Street in 1923.
A well-appointed new club house was built in 2001.

Transport
The railway never made it to New Quay therefore it was totally dependent on horse drawn transport until the start of the 20th century.
We compared these old photos of New Quay with the photos that we took at the same location recently. Waw! What a change!

New Quay has been the location for three major films. They were Tom Sails filmed in the 1920, The Constant Husband was filmed in 1955.
The most famous and recent film was called The Edge of love, filmed in 2007. Many local people were used as extras. It was a very excting and interesting time as not many people had ever experienced anything like that before. Different locations in New Quay were used including The Black lion, the pier and Charlies field, where two replica houses were built.
