This is our tour around Newydd Quay to visit important locations related to Dylan Thomas.
1 - The Trail starts at the former New Quay Tourist office - now a cafe.
This modern building is built on the site of a former Lime Kiln.
2 - Just up Church Street from the pier is the former pub called Dolau Inn.
This was the favourite pub of Caitlin, Dylan's Wife.
The name of the Village based on New Quay in Under Milk Wood.
I wonder what it says if you read it backwards?
3 - Toilets. The building that now houses the public toilets, was once the old lifeboat station.
Retired sea captins would meet here daily to gossip and it became known as Cwnc y Glap.
4 - Hungry Trout Formerly the Hungry Trout restaurant this building was the post office where Dylan Thomas posted scripts to London. It is now being converted to a restaurant and apartments.
5 - The Black lion hotel was Dylan's favourite and was owned by his friend Jack Pat (Patrick) . Gomer House across the road was the home of caption tom Polly Dylan's inspiration for caption cat.
The Black Lion Inn was perhaps Dylan’s favourite drinking haunt in New Quay, and he became friends with the landlord Jack Patrick. Today the Black Lion has a collection of Dylan memorabilia on display.
(from The Crumbs of One Man’s Year – 1946)
…as I weaved towards the toppling town and the black loud lion where the cat, who purred like fire, looked out of two cinders at the gently swilling retired sea-captains in the snug-as-a-bug back bar
6 - Sea Horse Inn. The Sea Horse used to be known as the 'Commercial'. Prior to that was known as the Sailors Home Arms - providing the name for 'Under Milk Wood's 'Sailor's Arms.
7 - 'Wendowel' is on the left along Towyn Road past the Chapel. It was once the home of Elizabeth Williams and Theodosia Legg, Dylan's Aunt and Cousin. He often stayed here with them in the 1930's.
8 - Manchester House once was a drapers similar to that run by Mog Edwards in Llareggub.
This shop has been through many changes. It was once a Gin shop buy today it is Guerins barber shop.
9 - Brongwyn Lane once ran round the coast from New Quay to Dylan's home 'Majoda'. However, much of the coast here - including Maesgwyn Farm - mentioned at the beginning of 'Under Milk wood', has been washed away.
10 - Llanina Mansion - Plas Llanina has been restored having almost fallen into ruin since Dylan's time here. It was once owend by lord Howard de Walden - a patron of Dylan Thomas.
Dylan wrote in the Apple house' at the end of the garden - sadly now dilapidated.
11 - Majoda. Dylan lived in the bungalow called 'Majoda' from September 1944 to July 1945 here he wrote many poems and scripts including 'Quite early one morning'.
He also started 'Under Milk Wood' while living here. The original house has been replaced by more modern bungalow.
The small bungalow where Dylan and Caitlin lived from September 1944 to the summer of 1945 is situated on the cliffs about a mile from New Quay; it has panoramic views of the town across Cardigan Bay.
It was here in March 1945 that the shooting incident took place that was portrayed in the 2008 film Edge of Love. Dylan’s Swansea friend Vera Killick (nee Philips) lived in the neighbouring bungalow Ffynnonfeddyg during their stay at Majoda.
The present Majoda is a later replacement of the wood and asbestos building that existed during Dylan’s time.

The house name was made up from the names of the landlord’s children Marjorie, John and David. Dylan suggested in a letter that he would re-name the place CATLLEWDYLER!

The newbuild, a three bedroom bungalow with oil central heating, retains just part of the original structure, but it's stunning views across the bay to New Quay and its 1.7 acres of grounds remain unchanged.
Dylan Thomas spent just under a year here from September of 1944 through to the early summer of the next year. Dylan, Caitlin and baby Aeronwy rented a small wooden bungalow, Majoda, situated just to the north of the town.
New Quay is one of many coastal towns and villages that Dylan visited or lived in, which all contribute something to Dylan’s imaginary 'Llareggub'.
The house had magnificent sea views and inspired Thomas to produce some of his most memorable work, including his radio piece ‘Quite Early One Morning‘, which is regarded as a prototype for ‘Under Milk Wood‘.
Comprehension Passage: The Poet - Dylan Thomas
(from Quite Early One Morning)
Quite early one morning in the winter in Wales, by the sea that was lying down still and green as grass after a night of tar-black howling and rolling, I went out of the house, where I had come to stay for a cold unseasonable holiday, to see it if was raining still, if the outhouse had been blown away, potatoes, shears, rat-killer, shrimp-nets, and tins of rusty nails aloft on the wind, and if all the cliffs were left.
