> To understand a block systems diagram of the heart monitoring system.
> To understand the use of and apply an accelerometer as a heart monitoring device.
> To successfully program the BBC micro:bit so that the system meets the design criteria.
Design Brief
Teacher to introduce the situation and design brief to learners. Use the teacher presentation as a guide for this. Emphasise that they will be using the BBC micro:bit system, which is a programmable system, to create their solution.
Brief
Using the BBC micro:bit, create a prototype for a personal heart monitoring system. The system must use an accelerometer to detect the movement of the heart. It must also use a suitable sound output and an LED display to give heart rate information to the user.
Planning
We have made a planning brief of the Micro:bit and explained what will be seen and how we hope it will look.
Using Micro:Bit creator we used the below coding for our Micro:bit.
We encountered some problems and when we did we were able to review and debug. They were usually simple things such as the variables.
Now this is the fun part!
We have coded, tested and debugged any problems so we used the school to check how exercising effected out heartbeats. We could also link the Micro:bit to an Oximeter to put our pulses on the big screen!
We looked at our success criteria and evaluated the project. Check out the videos below to see how they did.
Evaluation of the Project
As part of the collaboration work some of our Year 6 children presented their work to the cluster group.
4 Greenway children attended Meadowlane Primary and worked alongside 3 other schools to show our project along with trying out the other projects. We had a fantastic time.

Skills we have met
DCF: Interacting and Collaborating - Collaboration
Work with others to create an online collaborative project for a specific purpose, sharing and appropriately setting permissions for other group members.
DCF: Producing - Planning, sourcing and searching.
plan work independently before beginning the digital task.
DCF : Data and Computational Thinking - Problem Solving and Modelling
Select and combine a range of text, image, sound, animation and video to produce an outcome for a selected purpose; use software tools to enhance the outcomes for specific audiences
Numeracy
Identify the appropriate steps and information needed to complete the task or reach a solution
Science
make careful observations and accurate measurements, using digital and ICT equipment at times
