Sources of Strength is a best practice youth suicide prevention project designed to harness the power of peer social networks to change unhealthy norms and culture, ultimately preventing suicide, bullying, and substance abuse. The mission of Sources of Strength is to prevent suicide by increasing help seeking behaviors and promoting connections between peers and caring adults. Sources of Strength moves beyond a singular focus on risk factors by utilizing an upstream approach for youth suicide prevention. This upstream model strengthens multiple sources of support (protective factors) around young individuals so that when times get hard they have strengths to rely on.
HVCHS is in year two of implementing Sources of Strength. So far we have trained over 50 students and a dozen staff. We have also held many messaging campaigns throughout the school community. Check us out on instragram @hvsources
PANDA is an extracurricular club that seeks to prevent alcohol and drug abuse in students through the development of healthy coping and problem-solving skills, as well as through delivering accurate, fact-based information about substance use.
PANDA is comprised of approximately 50 students in grades 9-12 who present on topics to middle school students throughout the school year. We also set up informal mentoring relationships with middle school students who may need extra support as well as assist with other prevention programs (e.g., Operation Sticker Shock, Pre-Prom activities, awareness weeks).
PANDA applications are sent out the Spring of each school year and we are always looking for student leaders!
In addition to the formal programs above, additional speakers and programs are brought into HVCHS by the SAP and Wellness department related to drug and alcohol education. These include, but are not limited to:
Project Pride
Not Even Once
Operation Head-On
