One significant purpose of the SAP is to provide supportive individual and group counseling to students facing challenges related to substance use. The SAP at HVCHS takes a "broad brush" approach and recognizes that substance use rarely occurs in isolation and that mental health difficulties can be a factor in a student beginning to use substances or having difficulty in sustaining recovery. The SAP uses evidence-based and solution-focused approaches in working with students who may be struggling with a wide variety of challenges, including, but not limited to:
Drug and alcohol use
Family substance use
Anxiety, depression, and mood challenges
Relationship issues
School-specific challenges
Managing serious, persistent mental illness in school
School supportive counseling is not therapy and is not a substitute for outside mental health support. If your student requires additional support outside of school, please reach out and the SAP can provide recommendations for local providers based on your insurance needs.
We also always seek to collaborate with a student's outside provider when given consent to do so and as appropriate.
In addition to individual counseling, the SAP provides group counseling services to students as different needs arise. The SAP and counseling department more generally provide group services related to:
Drug and alcohol use
Family drug and alcohol use
Anxiety
Depression
Social Skills
General peer support
Groups based on specific student experiences (e.g., Grief, gender-specific, new students)
