The Student Assistance Program (SAP) offers individual and group counseling services to all students who wish to access them. Any student who receives services under the SAP is entitled to special legal protections on their confidentiality (42 CFR Part 2) to encourage them to be as honest and forthcoming as possible.
In short, 42 CFR Part 2 states that the SAP may not say that a person attends the program or disclose any information identifying the student as receiving drug and alcohol treatment, as well as any other related information a student may disclose. This also means that students are able to seek support for drug and alcohol use without parental permission.
There are only a few instances where confidentiality must be broken. Those include:
Harm to self (e.g., self-injury, suicidality)
Harm to others (e.g., homicidality, threats)
Abuse or neglect
Outside of these specific instances, information disclosed by students will not be shared without the student's written consent. I will, however, encourage and work with students to self-report information that may be relevant for you to know, when appropriate.
