Simply put, theatre is the art of storytelling.
In its simplest form, it’s two friends discussing their lived experiences. Whether you are talking in a way to engage your friend or participating as an active listener, you are practicing the art of theatre.
In its most extravagant form, it is storytelling with a chorus of actors, singing and dancing in costumes around moving scenery. Music playing with programmed lighting effects to enhance the mood and help establish the atmosphere. All the pieces perform together to tell a story while hoping the audience connects with characters, feels something new, and remembers the experience.
For me, as a student, I found theatre classes to be places that consistently embraced creativity, allowed for student choice, and encouraged peer collaboration. Even after 26 years of making theatre, there has always been more for me to learn and experience while working and creating alongside some of the most interesting, talented, and genuinely kind people in the world.
For my students, I hope to continue to create spaces that embrace your creativity, encourages self-expression, and enables you to build friendships and relationships that last a lifetime. I hope I can challenge you to imagine new possibilities. I will be there to help you develop your ideas into designs and encourage you to share them with your peers. Lastly, I will let you create your projects, tell your stories, and give you the applause you deserve.
For other adults in care of Theatre students, please know your student’s health and safety are my priority. Students will establish personal boundaries while also being encouraged to take healthy risks in attempting to learn new skills. Students will be expected to wear Personal Protective Equipment appropriate to the projects and tools they are working with and must pass a written and practical exam prior to being allowed in the workshop. They will be expected to create theatre in a safe and responsible way, taking care of themselves, their classmates, and the theater space itself.
Please don’t ever hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year here at the NGC.
