Researchers have found that social media platforms are the most powerful marketing tools that businesses can use. New advancements in technology every year, has forced marketers to have to adapt and change their ways to stay on top of the game. With new social media web technologies, anyone can publish their own content across many platforms, reaching the eyes of millions of people while not having to pay back advertisers, and even having little to no restriction on what they want to post to attract viewers. If you are someone looking to promote either your business or ideas, social media is a must in your journey of marketing.
In their exploration, the researchers were able to unveil a user population of over 800 million on Facebook alone, with 200 million joining in the year 2011. In addition to unveiling a gigantic audience, they were able to pinpoint how different aspects, games, promotions, and other factors of certain social media platforms are able to drag people in, and even direct them towards various products and advertisements. They demonstrated how powerful marketing on any form of social media can be, and how the diversity of platforms has a strong positive effect.
This information found by the researchers is very beneficial for businesses and corporations, as it shows the significance and impact social media can have. Facebook alone has 800 million users, as of today, Facebook would be the second largest country in the world. Therefore, anything posted on facebook essentially has the potential for an entire country worth of people to view it. “With the number of users rising each day on Facebook and other social networking sites, it is bound to bring in more customers for the business” (Saravanakumar & SuganthaLakshmi, 2012). Adding onto that, different social media platforms have various ways to attract people towards looking at certain things. Therefore, if a business posts their product or idea on a platform such as Instagram, Instagram will go out of their way to put that post in people’s feed, forcing them to essentially look at it. In comparison to something such as a televised ad, an ad on social media may be seen by anyone who uses that platform, while on a televised ad, only people who watch that specific channel will actually see the ad.
Speaking upon the powerfulness of Social Media, Levi Strauss, a businessman, said in one moment he made a post which was viewed directly by 400 people, but because of the word-of-mouth effect social media entails, nearly 1,600 people actually showed up to his shops. With the ability to see products, and message friends all on the same application at the touch of a finger, many people are influenced to share posts or message a friend talking about that specific post. This means that a post could only show up in one person’s feed, but with the messaging component of social media, that one person could share that post to however many people they want, that could then do the exact same thing. This creates almost like a domino effect, as it just takes one person to see the post for hundreds of others to know about it.
Included in their findings, the researchers share how there are so many different individual forms of social media, such as blogs, microblogs, social networks, forums, and many more. Each different form provides different ways to communicate and connect with consumers. One example of a unique platform is Twitter. Twitter allows for posts of only 140 characters or less to be posted, which requires little effort for anyone to do, and in turn provides customers and spread of information. With each different platform having different forms of sharing and spreading information, the researchers advise taking advantage of this, and suggest businesses to get themselves onto as many different social platforms as they can, and to stay active and vocal on each one of them.
Building onto the idea of posting on social media to market and advertise, brands and businesses must put forth effort into their posts and on responding to their consumers. The researches show statistics reported by Facebook themselves, that auto-posting to Facebook decreases likes and comments by 70%. This simply shows how effort must be put into every post, as continuous boring content is not going to catch the eye of not one person. In addition, people on social media want to comment on posts, and receive a response, they want to feel like their words are being heard. With effort and acknowledgement, it makes it very hard for any business to be setback through social media.
The researchers method for obtaining all this information was quite simplistic. They gained a majority of their information through analyzing different social media platforms, digging into information and statistics that are provided by each platform. They provided insight through their perspective on the topic, while also citing other sources and including information from their findings that back the idea to stay ahead in marketing, social media must be a primary source.
Provided this valuable information, social media must be seen as the gateway towards a world of opportunity in marketing. With many different platforms, some of the biggest being Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter, businesses, brands and corporations, if not already, must utilize social media to promote whatever product, ideas, or beliefs that they are a part of. With their gigantic population of consumers that only increases year by year, social media is undoubtedly the best and most efficient way of marketing, and if you are not on social media yourself, you are only setting yourself back, and preventing yourself from reaching the top.
