People from all over the world are very invested in clean eating. They want to look and feel the best they can, and lose weight. This has resulted in many people turning to clean eating. But what even is clean eating? Why are people so invested in it? According to Berkeley Well Being Institute, cleaning eating(or healthy eating), is defined as, “Healthy eating, or good nutrition, is simply eating adequate, well-balanced meals to support your body’s needs (World Health Organisation, 2018).”(Sarah Elahi, M.A). As you can see, cleaning eating is eating healthy nutritious meals that are good for your body. For example, nutritious foods are fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein! Those are some of the main food groups people tend to stick to when eating clean. But, why are people so invested in cleaning eating? What are the benefits from clean eating? One of the main reasons people eat clean is to create a better version of themselves. Clean eating is not only good for your body, but also can help you lose weight. In today’s culture, people are very interested in losing weight and looking the best they can. So when people found out that they can lose weight by eating clean, they were thrilled.
To continue on, there are actually many different methods to clean eating. Although everyone has the same general idea of what clean eating is, there are still many different methods people use. Some may focus more on protein which includes meats, while other people focus their diet on strictly fruits and vegetables. One method is becoming vegan. According to peta.org, it states, “Veganism is a type of vegetarian diet that excludes meat, eggs, dairy products, and all other animal-derived ingredients. Many vegans also do not eat foods that are processed using animal products, such as refined white sugar and some wines.”(Jolinda Hackett, December 22, 2022). This is one very popular method to clean eating. Many people do not believe in eating anything that has come from, or been produced from, an animal. So they stick strictly to lot’s of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. But, many people find this method controversial. The debate against veganism is that your body is not receiving some key nutrients that it would receive from meats, eggs, and other dairy products. Research from Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute has found that avoiding all animal foods may lead to nutritional deficiencies in vitamin B12, omega-3, calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, and high-quality protein. This is why some find veganism debatable

Another method of cleaning eating is Pescatarians. Pescatarins are the same as vegans, but they also eat fish. Some people become Pescatarian because of all of the benefits, such as; improved heart health, eating fatty fish, such as salmon which is rich in omega 3 can be beneficial to some people, reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, improved skin, could reduce your risk of cancer, and lower inflammation. These are great benefits to some people, which is why they choose to become Pescatarian. In contrast, being a pescatarian is also debatable. Just like being a vegan, the debate about Pescetarianism is that you are not receiving some key nutrients from animals. Which is why many people don’t like the idea of Pescatarism. But, in most diets, fruits and vegetables are key. Fruits and vegetables contain different nutritious values that, for example, donuts and french fries do not. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals, and lot’s of fiber which is very good for your body! Which is why many diets encourage lot’s of fruits and vegetables.
Another key question being asked about clean eating is how is this idea being spread? The main source of where clean eating is being spread from is on social media. There are many different influencers online who will share what they believe clean eating is, and why you should follow their ideas and tips. As a result, many people began to “eat clean” because a certain influencer online told them they should. A blog titled, “Powerless Persuasion; Ineffective Argumentation Plagues the Clean Eating Community” written by Jessie Cannizzo really dives into how much social media plays a role in clean eating, and how much power social media holds. It is a very informative blog. To continue on, one very popular social media influencer who encourages a healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle is Ellen Fisher. She has 697k subscribers, and gets around 78.5 million views per video. She is a vegan who makes videos about healthy recipes and healthy lifestyle tips. This is someone many people follow and are inspired by. Although some may say that following what influencers say is beneficial, many others say how dangerous it is. A huge argument against why you shouldn't listen to what influencers online say to do is because it could lead to bad things for your health, or could mislead you to an unhealthy life. Social media influencers don’t know who you are, and what your body type is. So following them could lead to your body going through things it shouldn't go through. Which is why people find social media to be misleading and not a reliable source to go to when eating clean.
As you can see, clean eating is a popular thing to do in our culture today. It is a way for people to try to be the best versions of themselves. There are many different methods to clean eating, and each method is debatable. What is important is that you do whatever method is right for your body, and you feel comfortable doing. Social media has played a big role in the clean eating movement, which can be dangerous. Social media can be very misleading, which could result in an unhealthy lifestyle. Be careful what you read online, and what you choose to follow.
