Fabrication of the Box
The box is composed of three major parts: the base, the frame, and the legs. All components were laser cut from 24" x 12" x 0.25" wood. The base is a simple rectangle of wood that is 11.5" x 15" used to place the paper drawings on top of. The frame was designed to hold the paper down to the base with thin enough sides that children could still see the full expanse of the drawings, and it ended up having the same outer dimensions of the base but with an inner centered rectangle that is 9.5" x 13". The legs had to be designed to factor in the wood thickness in order for them to fit snugly together to hold up the base. So, the two legs had dimensions of 11.5" x 3", while the other two legs had dimensions of 14.5" x 3". AutoCAD plots of the box are displayed below.
For assembly, all legs were hot glued underneath the base to aid in its support and height. The frame was attached by velcro to the top of the base so that the frame could be taken off to exchange paper drawings. Furthermore, a smaller box fit for the LCD screen and button were laser cut from the wood and attached to the left side of the box by hot glue.
Fabrication of the Magnifying Glass
The magnifying glass is made up of two of the same shaped pieces of wood and a piece of colored cellophane between them. We made three separate glasses, green; red, and blue, so printed 6 pieces of the outline. Our first variation of the glass was way too big, so for the second variation we scaled it down. We made the handle 3.56 inches long and 0.9 inches wide. The radius of the inner circle of the glass was 3.49 inches.
To assemble them, we took one side of the wood and hot glued a piece of the respective colored cellophane on it and cut the excess around off. We let that cool and then glued the other side of the wood on over.
