Approach grammatical features from three perspectives: form, meaning, and use.
Consider the following principles when incorporating instruction of grammatical features:
identify the grammar resources that students need
teach awareness of the nature of texts
develop awareness of the difference between written and spoken language
use corpora to explore texts (this research provides a teacher with important knowledge around frequency and use of a grammatical form in a specific genre or discourse which could then inform instruction).
use a variety of teaching approaches (inductive and deductive)
provide opportunities for guided noticing
provide opportunities for meaningful communicative practice
provide opportunities for students to produce stretched output
make links between grammar and vocabulary
use student errors to inform instruction
integrate grammar within complex communicative tasks (reading, writing, speaking, listening)
