We are all different in our own ways. Our first and foremost responsibility as teachers and service providers is to understand and accept our students for who they are, and try our best to support them in a way that is meaningful to them. All behaviors are communicative, and it is our professional duty to try to meet students where they are, and try to figure out the best way for us to help them learn. Nobody is perfect, and even as professionals, we will make mistakes, and that is ok. There will be ups and downs in this profession, and it will be helpful if the team collaborates and works together to serve our special education population.
Students thrive when they know what is coming up, and what are expected from them. It is very important for us to structure our classroom and our teaching that will meet that need. Having a routine throughout the day, as well as routined activities that are taught to the students is going to be beneficial to their learning. The different tabs on this website can give you some ideas on how to structure our classrooms to accommodate for these.
