Developing Emotional Literacy with the Zones of Regulation
We're excited to announce the whole-school introduction of the Zones of Regulation! This framework will enhance our existing PSHE curriculum and provide our children with valuable tools to understand and manage their emotions. The Zones of Regulation uses a simple, colour-coded system to help children identify how they are feeling and develop strategies for self-regulation.
Think of it as a way to build emotional vocabulary. Children will learn to recognise when they are in the:
Blue Zone: Feeling sad, tired, or bored.
Green Zone: Feeling happy, calm, and focused.
Yellow Zone: Feeling worried, frustrated, or excited.
Red Zone: Feeling angry, out of control, or overwhelmed.
It’s important to note that the Zones of Regulation is a support for our existing behaviour policy, not a replacement. It will aid in the reflection process when children experience periods of emotional dysregulation, helping them to understand their feelings, associated behaviours and develop strategies for returning to the Green Zone.
We believe that by fostering emotional literacy, we can empower our children to navigate their feelings effectively and build positive relationships. We look forward to sharing more about the Zones of Regulation between now and the end of the academic year.
Every classroom and leadership office has a ZoR area.
