Poetry week
Last week, each of the classes took part in Poetry week. This was an opportunity to look at different styles of poetry, look at a range of poets, perform poetry and in many cases then children ended the week by writing their own poems based on something they had read during the week.
Da Vinci
The children in Da Vinci class focused on the works by Michael Rosen. After looking at his work and performing them in class they each wrote their own sensible or silly lines for the poem Let me do it.
Berners-Lee
The children in Berners-Lee studied the poem Don’t by Michael Rosen. They discovered pattern and rhyme. At the end of the week they published their own poem based on the structure of Don’t. They were also able to perform Don’t and a video of this performance was shared with their adults. All of the class poems have been collated into a class poetry book.
Adams
Last week we learnt about Joseph Coelho and his book called Werewolf Club Rules. We used him as our inspiration to write our won poems call School tomorrow - excuses for Mum. We also wrote fact files about him, using our research skills on the internet.
My favourite poem was called ‘A little bit of food’, I liked this because he used actions to help us perform it. - Eloise.
My favourite poem was ‘A little bit of food’ because this was a poem which was more active and not boring like some sit down poems. - Emile.
Thunberg
Year 5 have been studying 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes, as part of Poetry week.
Initially, it was quite difficult to understand as a lot of the vocabulary was unfamiliar to us. However, we persevered, discussed and produced a performance of the poem which combined both the poem and the non - locomotor movement that we have been looking at as part of our dance lessons in P.E.
We have also looked at the character of Bess, in depth, and Year 5 have produced some excellent writing as a result. Here is an example of a character description that was produced.
Attenborough
In the past week we have learnt about the Highwayman poem by Alfred Noyes. During this week we wrote a character description about the three main characters [the Highwayman, Bess, Tim]. We have performed a poetry performance of each verse as a class on our chrome books. The main idea of this poem is a love story with a jealous Ostler called Tim. My favourite part of this week was when we did the poetry performance. - Amelia.
Book donations
Once again, I would like to thank all of the parents and carers who have donated books to the school recently. These make a huge difference in the amount of text we have in classes and in the Learning Lounge, which the children can access for their own pleasure.
