How will you get graded in class?

Grading: Pass (100% or Fail 59%)

2 non participation days with no make up will equal a failing grade for the swimming unit. We will offer several make up sessions throughout the year for your benefit.

Medical Excuses:

A doctor’s written excuse is appreciated if a student is to be excused from swimming for more than one class period. A parent’s written excuse will be accepted if the student has been absent, and is just returning to school after being ill. It should be noted that students are expected to make up non-participation days that result from a doctor or parent note. Participation in class is a vital part of the swimming curriculum, and is graded accordingly. Forty percent of the swimming grade is based on participation.

Menstruation:

A major concern in swimming for girls, parents and instructors has been menstruation. Your daughter will be expected to swim if she feels comfortable using tampons. If not, a note from a parent will be required to be excused from swimming. If there is no note, your daughter will still be excused from swimming but within 2 school days a note must be given to the swimming instructor. If your daughter fails to do this, it will result in points being deducted from students grade. Please communicate any concerns with your instructor.

Day 1- Rules and Regulations

Pool Rules & Expectations:

1. Shower before entering the pool. 2. No running on the pool deck 3. No diving on the three shallow walls. 4. Do not push anyone into the water. 5. Appropriate swim attire is required at all times. (Females ONE PIECE) 6. Wait on bleachers for attendance before entering water 7. Let someone know if you do not know how to swim. 8. Pick up after yourself in the locker room 9. If you do not bring materials (suit & towel) will result in a non participation day.

Review of basic strokes

(Usually about 4/5 days)

Warm up: (10 bobs, whirlpool/ water-jog)
Review Basics of floating, elementary backstroke & side Stroke .
- Basics of floating
  - Partner up and assist each other up until the partner is ready to float on their own. (Ques:Fill lungs with air, Belly up / arch your back, Chin back , look at the ceiling )
- Basics of elementary backstroke
  - Glide off the wall,
  - ARMS: (Ques: little bird, big bird, flap) / (monkey , airplane, soldier)
  - LEGS: HAVE STUDENTS PRACTICE ON LAND!
  - Whip kick (Ques: back, out, around, together)

Whole Stroke ques:- {UP , OUT , TOGETHER}

- {Head back, Look up at the ceiling}

- {Glide!!!!}

THIS IS A RECOVERY OR RESTING STROKE YOU SHOULD NOT USE A LOT OF ENERGY!

Basics of Side Stroke:
- Arms: (Que: Grab apple put it in the basket
- Legs: (Ques: Top leg back, whip together {Scissors kick}

Assessment: Edpuzzle assessment

**Uncomfortable students have the option to hang on to a fun noodle / backboard.

Day 6 - Rescue Skills

Throwing assist

Dry reaching assist

In water reaching assist

Safety float
