IGCSE Physical Education
PE at IGCSE level provides students with an opportunity to study both the practical and theoretical aspects of physical education. It is designed to encourage enjoyment in physical activity by providing learners with an opportunity to take part in a range of physical activities and develop an understanding of effective and safe physical performance. This helps learners to develop an appreciation of the necessity for sound understanding of the principles, practices and training that underpin improved performance, better health and well-being.
Course Content
Students will study all of the following topics:
Anatomy and physiology
Health, fitness and training
Skill acquisition and psychology
Social, cultural and ethical influences
Students will also undertake four different physical activities chosen from at least two of the seven categories listed below. There are numerous activities within each category, which means that students can select a great variety of activities that they most enjoy and the activities that they feel they can best perform. The seven categories are:
Games
Gymnastics
Dance
Athletics
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
Swimming
Combat Activities
Assessment
Students take two compulsory components of assessment. There is no distinction between core and extended content. All students complete one theory exam and one piece of coursework.
The theory exam is 1 hour 45 minutes and is completed at the end of Year 11. Students answer all questions in the paper and the result of this exam is worth 50% of the overall grade.
The coursework is completed throughout Year 10 and 11, where students undertake in four physical activities from at least two of the seven categories listed above. This coursework is Internally assessed by teachers at HHIS and then externally moderated by Cambridge.
