STUDENT SHARING

Sharing from students who have taken part in the Global Internship Programme in the past.

Many of our past interns see the internship experience to be an extremely valuable one for their personal and academic development, their employability prospects, and for developing their sense of global citizenship.

Virtual Internship

I am grateful to have an overseas internship experience despite the pandemic. It was a unique experience learning how to work remotely. I was able to learn new skills such as web development on Wix. By helping the company build a website, I was also able to develop my Wix website portfolio, which would help me in future internship/job opportunities.

I truly feel that the lessons I learned throughout the virtual internship experience will carry me throughout my professional career. It trains my time management, flexibility and adaptability, communication skill, critical thinking. It is a great opportunity to evolve and learn and has given me confidence in my own abilities.

Face-to-face Internship

Rotating through various departments in OOCL, I came to understand the operations throughout the container shipping company. For me, the most exciting experience was a visit to the OOCL Egypt, one of their container ships. This valuable experience has broadened my horizon and raised my enthusiasm towards the maritime shipping industry. Interning in Singapore, I also got the chance to communicate with people of different races. This internship has not only consolidated what I learnt in university; it has also enhanced my interpersonal skills and shaped me into a well-rounded person.

I did a 3-month internship at Pioneer Air Cargo, which offers logistics services and total solutions. I settled into life in Bangkok very quickly and loved working there with my professional and friendly teammates. It was a valuable experience to gain a broad understanding of the scope and variety of the services they offer. Moreover, being at Pioneer helped me overcome my weaknesses and harness my strengths, which is beneficial to my lifelong learning journey.

During the internship, I experienced two very different roles - HKTDC telemarketer and Secretary of the Hong Kong Singapore Business Association (HSBA).

As an HKTDC telemarketer, I was responsible for calling potential buyers in Singapore and confirming their attendance at the fairs in Hong Kong. Also, I assisted in organising the 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner and yearbook publication. From getting quotations to visiting sites and drawing up proposals, organizing the event allowed me to reflect and improve. I also visited many trade fairs in Singapore, which was an eye-opening experience.

I interned at Comms8, an integrated marketing consultancy bridging brands and customers across Europe and China. Working with marketeers and PR practitioners globally made me realise that the working style in China is somewhat different from that in the West. As part of my internship I did data analysis, from data cleansing to data translation, which required knowledge about branding, competitors and consumer behaviours. I was also tasked with acting as the ‘bridge’ between the clients and Chinese influencers. It was a lot of fun to communicate with the influencers in Chinese internet language.

Doing an internship in Frankfurt was the best experience of my life! Frankfurt is one of the most important cities for the banking industry. Also, Frankfurt has lots of beautiful views that make you fall in love with the city. During the two-month internship, I not only learnt about banking in general but also the banking market in Germany. This has given me a more comprehensive view of the banking market as a whole.

Working at Pacific BMW for a six-month internship was a fabulous experience. During the internship, I was able to rotate between different departments, such as accounting, marketing and guest experience. The company also placed great trust in the interns by allowing us to make decisions as part of our work.

Each week I was assigned the task of preparing an article for the weekly magazine. As a newbie in the newspaper industry, this opportunity helped me learn the basics of how the press works and let me try my hand at being a journalist. As well as allowing me to practise my writing skills, the internship also gave me a chance to enhance my translation skills and put my knowledge to practical effect when translating English reports and news into Chinese. All of my colleagues were friendly and helpful, and the feedback they gave me will definitely benefit me in the future.
