About uniforms

Why uniforms? A good question.

Uniforms distinguish us

Bronx Science is green, and Stuyvesant is red here. In races, everyone knows who we are.

Uniforms bind us together

Everyone on the team wears the same uniform, and that reminds us of our common purpose.

Uniforms let us run fast

We move both our arms and legs more than almost any other sport, and for a longer time. Our uniforms need to let us do that comfortably and with ease.

Uniforms tell other teams we're serious about winning

Some schools are casual about their attire. The Flying Dragons are not.

Everyone is issued one practice uniform and one race uniform.

Black practice uniforms

These can be worn to any practice but must be worn on days designated as "practice uniform" days on the calendar.

Purple race uniforms

Purple uniforms may only be worn at races and certain special designated events. They may not be worn for practices, personal workouts, or any other purpose. When you are wearing purple you are representing your school, your team, and your very best effort.

Cross country runners wear loose uniforms. Track runners have a choice.

Loose style

These are standard Nike college & high school running shorts and singlets. These can be worn in both our cross country and track & field teams.

Tight style

The tight style (shorter for girls, longer for boys) is an option for track & field in the winter and spring. They are never worn by our cross country runners.

Uniform rules and information

  • Be proud of your uniform. It's not like those worn by any other sport. It shows that you're serious about how you train and race.

  • Don't come to practice dressed for another sport--like basketball. That clothing is designed for a different kind of movement. Running shorts come in a variety of lengths but always are lightweight and have a built-in brief.

  • Loose team running shorts are worn alone without boxers or compression shorts. Your team tops are worn without t-shirts underneath. Other teams have other rules. Exceptions due to weather will be announced in advance.

  • Boys tight team running shorts (track teams only) must be worn with a single layer compression short underneath. Those will be provided.

  • The split side of the loose shorts can be pinned or sewn closed if you so choose.

  • Failure to wear the appropriate uniform to a practice or race will count as one-half an absence.

  • Race uniforms must be earned. New runners run their first race in black uniforms and if they complete their race without walking (cross country) or falling (track), are issued a purple race uniform. This is true even for former cross country runners in the first season of track.

  • Uniforms cost the team $25 per piece, for a total of $100 per athlete. They are provided to everyone at no cost, but we ask families who are able to cover the cost to do so and consider an additional donation to cover the expense for families who cannot pay anything. The PTA grant to the team also helps with this.

  • If you outgrow your uniform, you can exchange them for larger sizes at no cost.

  • Uniforms can be machine washed but the team logo will melt in the high heat of a dryer. They will air dry very quickly. The quickest thing is to hand wash them. Follow this video except wait only five minutes and use liquid dish soap.

Team jackets and pants

Second-season athletes are issued jackets and pants

This is in recognition to your commitment to the team.

Jackets & pants are worn throughout a meet

...and also for special occasions.

Jacket & pants rules and information

  • Jackets and pants are issued at the start of your second season, track or cross country, on the team.

  • Jackets have your last name on them as well as stars to indicate your seniority on the team.

  • Jackets and pants must be worn when you report to a weekday meet before we leave school, with your uniform underneath. No other street clothes are allowed at a meet unless Coach so indicates due to conditions. For weekend meets you should arrive wearing them with your race uniform underneath.

  • Jackets & pants cost the team $100 per set. We ask families to cover that cost but everyone gets a set regardless.

  • Failure to wear your jacket & pants to a meet counts as half an absence.
