Student Grades

How are my child's grades determined?

As a fifth grade student, your child will receive grades in Communication Arts (reading, spelling, English, writing), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Your child's grades will be determined using two types of assessments: formative assessments and summative assessments.

Formative Assessments: Formative assessments are used to "inform" your child, you, and myself about your child's learning learning over the course of a unit/skill. These assessments will count for *20% of your child's overall grade in each subject area.

Examples: worksheets, quizzes, centers activities, small projects, homework assignments, etc.

**Summative Assessments: Summative assessments are used to "sum-up" your child's learning at the end of a unit/skill. They communicate your child's mastery, or progress toward mastery, of our learning goals. These assessments will count for *80% of your child's overall grade in each subject area.

Examples: reading vocabulary and comprehension tests, writing projects, math tests, science/social studies tests, etc.

Please do not hesitate to contact me, if you have any questions regarding your child's assessments, over the course of the school year. I am here to help, and I will be happy to discuss your child's grades with you.

*The ratio of formative assessments at 20% of your child's overall grade, to summative assessments at 80% of your child's overall grade, is set forth by the Intermediate School Guidelines.

**If your child scores below a 70% on a summative assessment, it will be sent home for your review and signature. Please sign the assessment and return it to school the following school day.
