This year your child will not have homework to complete each week. Please use the time that you would typically spend on homework for completing the extra practice pages (information below), and/or reading a book with your child.
On occasion I will send home a family project or extra work for your child as needed. These items will come home on the school side of your child's folder.
Please note, the paper in the extra practice folder are optional.
MATH practice: Will begin coming home in August. As we begin new topics (typically every week to week and a half), you will find several pages stapled together. Please note the pages have a front and a back. Please only work on 1-2 pages of math per night, if you choose to complete the packet. You may find some weeks where he/she will not have math packets because we have not moved on to a new topic yet. The math packets can be found in the back of the folder. These should be returned to school when you have completed the packet. I will note the assessment date in our weekly newsletter. These pages will be review pages of what was already taught in the classroom. Not only will your child be receiving extra practice, but he/she will also be spending quality time with you as well. Please know math packets are optional. It does not have to be done in one night or at one sitting. It is meant to be completed throughout the week and returned before our assessment. When your child completes the math packet, send it back to school. I will not take a grade on these pages. When your child completes the work, he or she will receive a treasure
READING practice: Beginning in January Your child will begin bring home leveled books. If you choose to complete the books, please read the stories in the folder for three nights (it is not necessary to read three nights consecutively). You can keep these books at home. I encourage you to sit down with your child and listen to them read. After your child reads the story, ask questions about the story such as: who were the characters, where did the story take place, what was the story about, etc. These books can be written on the Book-it and Pasta House forms (see information below).
During the months of October through March, we will be participating in the Pasta House Reading program and the Pizza Hut Book-It program. Students are encouraged to read 10 books and return the reading log to school each month to earn a Pizza Hut coupon for a free personal pan pizza and free spaghetti/ravioli meal from the Pasta House. The Pasta House coupons are available from October through February and the Pizza Hut coupons are available from October through March. These sheets are included in the clear pouch in the folder for your convenience. With your cooperation my goal is to have every child reading independently on a “C” level by the end of the school year.
