All 7th and 8th grade students have an advisory, required and elective courses on their schedule. Required full year classes include Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Math, and PE/Health.
Schedule Changes
The offering and staffing of elective courses are dependent upon student requests made during spring forecasting. A significant amount of time and effort is devoted to giving students their top elective choices when creating the master schedule. However, due to limited seat availability in some classes, it is possible that students will receive electives identified as their back-up choices. Students are advised to plan ahead and consider their elective choices carefully during the forecasting process as changes are not always possible when the school year starts. Elective changes may be considered September 22-30th if space permits it.

Academic Teams
Each grade level at Poynter is divided into two academic teams, or houses. Each team has a Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math teacher. By creating smaller learning communities, academic teams help strengthen the connection students have with each other and to their teachers. Students are assigned to an academic team randomly by computer during the scheduling process and remain on the same team for the school year. Our academic teams are named after local college and university mascots (Pacific University Boxers, Linfield College Wildcats, University of Portland Pilots, and Portland State University Vikings).
