What are school counselors and what do they do?
Educators that are specially trained in child and adolescent development
Develop and facilitate a schoolwide program that supports the academic, career, and social/emotional development of all students
Deliver classroom lessons
Provide topic-specific small group counseling activities
Meet with students individually to support
- school-related concerns and problem-solving
- peer difficulties
- new or challenging situations
- coping strategies
- career development and academic planning
School counselors are not psychologists. They do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools. However, they are trained to recognize and respond to urgent student mental health needs and can assist students and families seeking connection to mental health resources and services in the community.
