Greetings, Baldwin Street Middle School Families and Community!
As we enter the New Year, it is an exciting time for our students! Our 8th graders are beginning the final stage of their middle school careers and looking forward to high school. Our 7th graders are preparing to be the 8th graders, and our staff are beginning to prepare for the upcoming school year. This is the time of year where students begin to schedule and make choices for 2024-2025. Our 8th graders will have a registration night at the high school and get an chance to see what opportunities exist there for their future educational journey. Quarter 2 will also come to an end on January 19th.
With all of this excitement and forward-thinking, we are also excited to engage in the learning the rest of the year to ensure our students are all prepared for the next level of learning. During this stage of the school year, the winter doldrums can kick in and sickness can be prevalent. As we head into this stretch, here are some tips to help your child maintain their learning momentum:
Balance academic activities with fun and relaxing activities to avoid burnout.
Maintain a consistent sleep schedule to ensure your child is well-rested and ready to learn upon returning to school.
Check in on PowerSchool to ensure your students are making adequate progress in their classes.
Email or call staff if there are concerns that you are noticing in your child's education.
On behalf of our entire staff, I’d like to thank our parents for partnering with us during these crucial middle school years. We pride ourselves on being a school that is responsive to both student and parent needs. I encourage you to reach out to me or any of our staff members to share an idea, suggestion, comment, concern, or praise. Please continue to read on as there are several messages about what is happening at BMS this month. Thank you again for your support!
Happy New Year!
Ryan Crete
Please help me in welcoming Ms. Hannah Wettlaufer to the BMS teaching staff. Ms. Wettlaufer will be teaching Spanish for our 8th graders.
One aspect of our PBIS program at BMS is acknowledging positive behaviors that embody at least one aspect of our SOAR acronym (be Safe, Own it, Act responsibly, be Respectful). Students receive SOAR tickets and are entered into a weekly drawing for recognition and small prizes. At the start of December, we began to also acknowledge students with "golden tickets" (like American Idol) who consistently demonstrate SOAR’ing behavior. These golden ticket nominations can be given by any staff member. Thanks to generous donations from Meijer, Jet’s Pizza and Hudsonville Lanes, we are able to honor these students with some bigger prizes and additional recognition.
The following students have been recognized with golden tickets since the start of December:
Ella DeKam
Eric Stursma
Henry Wert
Charley Carlton
Maelyn Helder
Zach Langeland
Gavin Groendal
Justin Dykstra
Fiona Pawlik
Quin Brower
Hayden Minder
Jordyn Pals
Luke Wojtas
Thank you to these students for making BMS a better place and our amazing sponsors, Meijer, Jet’s Pizza and Hudsonville Lanes.
Congratulations to this year's Yearbook Contest Winners!

Winter 2 sports (Girl's Basketball, Wrestling, and Boys Swim & Dive) begin this week. To be prepared for Winter 2 sports, be sure that your athlete has a sports physical, and athletic code, as well as the $75 participation fee turned in (unless you have already paid it this school year). Links to the forms and payment are below:
1. Pay to Play and athletic code link: https://hudsonville.recdesk.com/Community/Program
All athletes will need a ticket from the office once everything has been submitted to the office to try out and/or practice. Please make sure everything is turned in before the holiday break so your student can pick up their ticket from the office.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Jon VanSlyke (jvansly@hpseagles.net) Josh Magley (jmagley@hpseagles.net), or Karen Hill (khill@hpseagles.net)
Hudsonville Little League 2024 Spring Registration is now open!
The deadline is January 14, 2024 for most divisions (available space only following).
Eligibility is based on home address, school address, or having played in the league prior.
All students from Forest Grove, Jamestown Upper & Lower, South, Park Elementary Schools, Riley St. Middle School, Early Childhood Center, and Hudsonville High School are eligible. For more information and to register, please visit: www.HudsonvilleLittleLeague.com
If your child is scheduled in a health class during the 3rd or 4th quarter of the 2023-2024 school year, there will be an in-person meeting on:
Monday, January 15 at 7:00 pm
@ Hudsonville High School North Campus Media Center
Park and enter @ Main Office (parking lot between Freshman Building and HS)
This meeting will outline the reproductive health curriculum your child will receive this year. Teachers will walk through the various topics and review details of the reproductive health curriculum approved by the Hudsonville Public Schools Board of Education. While health class is mandatory for all Hudsonville Public School seventh-graders, the class's reproductive health portion is by parent opt-in. This opt-in option means you have the choice to have your child participate in the approved reproductive health curriculum or complete an alternative assignment during that unit of health class. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of this meeting. While we want all parents to have the information shared at the meeting, attendance is not required for you to opt your child in or out of the reproductive health portion of the class.
If you have any questions at this time, please reach out to your child’s health teacher or building administrator. Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to educate, challenge and inspire our students each day they are in our care.

Parents of Baldwin Street Middle School students! We need your partnership in many different ways during the school year. Opportunities include regular Copy Parent, volunteer during school day as needed, Parent Club Board positions and activities, Library, and Science Olympiad. Please complete the Parent Volunteer Opportunities Survey.
***All parent volunteers are required to have a background check on file. This includes Parent Chaperones that attend field trips throughout the school year. Please fill out our online "Volunteer Background Check Form" on the BMS website.
Please contact Bridget Gilliam or call the office at (616) 669-7750 with any questions.
I want to remind parents of the drop-off/pick-up expectations for before and after school at BMS. We have purposely closed off the parking lot at this time from parent traffic to ensure that our staff members are able to park and walk into the building safely. We please ask that you continue to use the front office loop to drive in, drop-off or pick-up your student, and then complete the loop to exit the parking lot. Please also note that students should not be arriving to school prior to 7:15 am or staying after past 3:45 pm. Be sure to follow these guidelines.
Also, we now have a crossing guard available at 36th and Baldwin. We are asking all students that walk home to please cross at the light to ensure their safety when crossing Baldwin Street. Please help us with reminding your students of these expectations.
During the winter, we ask that all students that ride the bus report to the gym by 2:55 pm. We then announce when the buses arrive and dismiss students from the gym by bus number. All other students are asked to be out of the building by 2:55 pm. If students are misbehaving during this after-school time, they may be assigned transportation points. If a child receives seven transportation points, they may be suspended from bus privileges.
If students are attending a sporting event in the gym, they do need to leave the building and return at 4:00 pm when competitions begin. They are not allowed to stay in the building until the event unless they are a participant in the activity or sporting event.
Congratulations to our SOAR Award winners! Students were nominated by a staff member at BMS and were entered into a drawing. At the end of the week, the following students were chosen to be recognized with the BMS prize cart and whole school announcement.

As you know, BMS is now a 7th and 8th grade building only. With this change, our culture and atmosphere at BMS has changed significantly. We have focused this year on making BMS one body with separation of grade levels only exisiting for core classes. If you have older children that attended BMS, you will recall an evening recognition event that took place at either the football stadium or high school gym. Over the past two years, I have sought feedback from parents, students, and staff about what a meaningful end of year celebration looks like for our 8th grade students. I have also researched many of our neighboring districts about their end of year celebrations to come up with the best fit for BMS and our students. We then formed a committee to review the feedback and research and have decided to shift gears to best fit the culture here at BMS.
Please mark June 5, 2024 at 10:30 am on your calendars to help us celebrate our 8th grade students!
On June 5, 2024 our 8th grade students will celebrate their last day of middle school with a half-day celebration. Please see the proposed plan below:
7:50 - 9:30 am. 8th Grade Breakfast and Awards sponsored by 7th grade families
Students will receive their awards/certificates at this event. Including the Dave Power's Exemplary Character Award
Students will also learn of the 8th Grade Mock Election Results
Our Student Council class president will also give a speech during breakfast to her class.
If you are a 7th grade parent and interested in helping with this event, please contact Karen Hill at khill@hpseagles.net.
9:30 - 10:30 am Yearbook Signing
10:30 - 11:15 am 8th Grade Walk Out
7th graders and staff will line hallways.
Parents will be invited to this portion of the event to line the walkways around the school.
8th grade students will then parade through the building and through the parents to be recognized for their completion of middle school.
Parents can then meet their student and take them home.
All students without a ride will be asked to return to the cafeteria until dismissal at 11:15 am.
We will be communicating out more details in future newsletters. If you have any questions about this event, please contact Ryan Crete at rcrete@hpseagles.net.
