Concept-Based Curriculum & Instruction
WHY are we learning about Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction? Then emerging curriculum design is concept-based, with the conceptual knowledge, procedural knowledge, competencies, literacies, and numeracies identified directly within each learner outcome. This page is a starting point of resources to clarify what this means.
In the Guiding Framework, it is explained that "Each subject has a body of knowledge that is specific to that domain of study. This body of knowledge includes the facts, symbols, rules, principles and concepts (conceptual knowledge) that constitute the subject. Each subject also has its strategies, steps and systemic approach to problem solving (procedural knowledge). Provincial curriculum includes both subject conceptual and procedural knowledge. Conceptual and procedural knowledge (as identified in the learning outcomes in the programs of study) provide the subject content and context for the development of competencies, and literacy and numeracy. Through developing and applying literacy, numeracy and competencies, students acquire understanding that facilitates meaningful connections across and within subjects. Students then apply their knowledge to new situations, improve upon ideas, solve problems and make decisions." p15.
