Course Outline

Unit 1: Structure of Matter: What matter matters! (3 weeks) Within this unit, students will learn that chemistry is a central science that overlaps all other sciences. Chemistry matters in everyday life, and it applies to many different careers. It is a study of matter and its interactions with each other and the environment; classification of matter and it most fundamental parts, the subatomic particles.

Unit 2: What’s under the kitchen sink? (3 weeks) Many substances react chemically with other substances to form new substances with different properties. This change in properties results from the ways in which atoms from the original substances are combined and rearranged in the new substances. In this unit, students will have an opportunity to see how chemistry is used in everyday products.

MARKING PERIOD 3 SUMMATIVE TEST: March 26, 2024

Unit 3: Energy  (3 weeks) The unit connects to the conservation of energy from Chemistry to a deep understanding of energy transformations related to the Sun (as the ultimate energy source on Earth), current and developing technologies, as well as the application of alternative energy sources to combat local and global climate issues.

Unit 4: Engineering (3 weeks) Students are introduced to the world of creative chemical engineering product design. Teams work through the steps of the engineering design process (or loop) by completing an actual design challenge presented in six steps.

MARKING PERIOD 4 SUMMATIVE TEST: June 13, 2024

Presentation of Final Project (1 week) - Students choose to share a topic that pertains to Applied Chemistry

Grading per Marking Period:

Assessments: (60%) Includes unit tests, projects and Marking Period Summative tests.  Unit test will be given at the end of each unit.  Students will have up to two weeks to make revisions for the Unit test.  A project can be assigned as the summative assessment for the Unit. Marking period summative test is a Final Assessment of the standards that were already accessed during the marking period.  This is a quick 10 question test.

Assignments: (40%):  Each student is responsible for Mastering the classwork provided. This includes quizzes (done every B -DAY),  and classwork. The purpose of classwork is to give students opportunity to practice and master the standards.  All assignments are due by the specified date and time.  All assignments are posted in Google Classroom.

LATE WORK: Late work will be accepted.  Speak with the teacher first.  After two weeks, work will not be given credit.
