Teacher: Mrs. Stephen Email: kstephen@hpschools.net Phone Number: (732) 572-2400 ext. 3634 Required Materials: Graphing calculator, and a carbon capable laboratory notebook
Textbook: Steven S. Zumdahl, Chemistry 10th Edition (2018). Plus, you’ll work online at your own pace, advancing only when you’re ready.
This course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. For some students, this course enables them to undertake, as freshmen, second-year work in the chemistry sequence at their institution or to register for courses in other fields where general chemistry is a prerequisite. For other students, the AP Chemistry course fulfills the laboratory science requirement and frees time for other courses. Students should spend at least five hours a week studying outside of class. The AP chemistry exam is sponsored by the College Board and administered and operated by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The specific Big Ideas, Enduring Understandings, Essential Knowledge, Learning Objectives and Science Practices relating to the AP chemistry course, can all be found in the AP Chemistry course description published by the College Board. You will also find a lot of information about the AP chemistry course and exam in the AP chemistry section of the College Board website. All students should register for the AP exam that will be administered on Monday, May 6, 2024 @12p.m.
The AP Chemistry examination format The AP Chemistry exam is divided into two sections. Much more on this later, but for now;
Section I: (90 minutes, 50% of the total grade)
60, multiple-choice questions. Select the best answer from a choice of four (A-D).
In this section of the exam CALCULATOR is allowed plus access to the periodic table and equations & constants sheet (found here AND on pages 160-162 of the course description). 1 point is awarded for a correct answer, 0 points (without penalty) for a wrong answer, and 0 points for any question left unanswered.
Section II: (105 minutes, 50% of the total grade)
Seven, free-response questions. (3 ‘long’ questions & 4 ‘short’ questions).
In this section of the exam a calculator is allowed along with access to the periodic table and equations & constants sheet.
*Office Hours for Students
Available by appointment only.
Either email or tell Mrs. Stephen in advance.
Each of UNITS 1-9 listed above has a title that is designed to encapsulate the content of each of the six Big Ideas as defined by the College Board in their Course and Exam Description for AP Chemistry.

Assignments: (40%)
Quizzes - after every chapter (“pop-quiz”)
AP Classroom Progress Checks (MCQ and FRQ) - The College Board resource used to get students familiar with AP -type exam questions.
Assessments (60%)
Labs (every A day) - The labs completed require following or developing processes and procedures, taking observations, and data manipulation. Students communicate and collaborate in lab groups; however, each student writes a laboratory report in a lab notebook (digitally or carbon copy type) for every lab they perform.
Tests - Staple the corrections to the front of the original test WITHOUT changing any of the information on the original and hand it to the teacher in class no later than 1 week after the unit test date. LATE CORRECTIONS are not accepted. You will get back HALF of the credit lost if the corrections are done properly.
MARKING PERIOD SUMMATIVE TESTS - NO RETAKES
LATE WORK: Speak with the teacher first. After two weeks, work will not be given credit.
PRACTICE: Students will be assigned videos and Topic questions for each section of study in AP Classroom. Khan Academy will also be used as a resource for students to practice. Practice work is not counted in the grade book, but will be considered by the teacher to gauge the student's progress in class.
Make up Work
If you know that you will be absent (field trips, doctor appts., etc.) please schedule any make ups with your teacher before the day of the scheduled absence.
Exams/Quizzes
Students who are absent must schedule a make up with their teacher at the earliest possible convenience.
Make ups may be a different version than the original.
Students who are absent the day before an exam/quiz are still expected to take it as scheduled.
Labs
Students who did not participate in the laboratory experiment will be expected to still do the pre-lab.
Completion of the laboratory data tables, calculations, and post-lab analysis will be submitted with data that was collected during a make-up lab. Make up lab is the day you return to class after an absence. YOU MAY NOT USE YOUR LAB PARTNER’S DATA.
Students who make up a laboratory experiment will be expected to adhere to original class due date for all laboratory work. If lab needs to be made up after the due date, speak with teacher.
Student Responsibilities
Attendance, punctuality, courtesy, and respect are expected at all times.
5-14 mins is considered tardy to class. Three tardies = one absence.
>14 mins is considered cutting class, and referrals will be written up for students cutting class.
Loss of Credit occurs when: 16 absences in Full Year Course
Keep a spare pair of sneakers and socks in your locker to have in case you wear open-toed shoes on lab day.
Take an initiative for your learning. You get out of it as much as you put into it.
